Effective Grain Storage for Better Livelihoods of African Farmers
01.04.2012
- 31.03.2016
Post harvest losses are being recognised by all major stakeholders such as Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Development Bank and FAO as a major problem. Postharvest losses have repercussions on hunger, poverty alleviation, income generation and economic growth. On the other hand besides quantitative losses, qualitative losses imply that the full nutritional value is not delivered. This is particularly important for HIV/AIDS affected population. SDC has a vast experience with metal silo technology in POSTCOSECHA programme in South America and can contribute in the region to the policy dialogue and share experiences with SADC, African Development Bank and FAO including SDC national offices in Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

Using biofuels to combat the energy crisis
01.04.2012
- 30.09.2017
The use of biofuels does not necessarily have a negative impact on food production and thus on food security. The two goals can be combined, as is shown in an SDC project in Cuba. In July 2012 in Guantánamo a plant started work which transforms jatropha seeds into biofuel. Thanks to the Swiss biomass project, six Cuban communes now benefit from cheaper, renewable and reliable energy.

Getting the largest possible number of people to adopt the practice of washing their hands with soap
01.04.2012
- 30.06.2014
In developing countries, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections are responsible for two-thirds of infant mortality, i.e., five times more than malaria and thirteen times more than VIH/AIDS. And yet, simply giving your hands a good washing with soap constitutes a very effective way to counter these infectious diseases. In India, the SDC is active in promoting this practice by means of a large-scale awareness-raising campaign involving the social media, famous cricket players, and Bollywood stars.

Strengthening Local Governance Accountability Project (SLGAP)
01.04.2012
- 31.08.2019
The project empowers communities to claim their developmental rights by capacitating local civil society organisations (CSOs) to hold their local governments accountable. This is achieved by applying various social accountability (SA) tools. A protracted phase of political transition, a lack of structural accountability and transparency, rising corruption at all levels of government, and an absence of elected representatives makes the intervention highly relevant for target communities in SDC project areas.

Sustainable conservation on Hungarian Natura 2000 sites
01.04.2012
- 31.10.2016
Countrywide surveys and assessments of data-deficient forest and wetland species and habitats deliver lacking data necessary to decide on corrective measures. Based on the data, management plans for Natura 2000 areas are elaborated in close cooperation with all stakeholders as farmers or the forest industry. The plans contain corrective measures and will contribute to preserve the areas combining the interests of environment and economy.
