Rapid and unplanned urbanization results in poor health. The COVID-19 crisis has put city governments and urban communities at the frontline of the response. Enhancing urban governance for health and building resilient cities contribute to addressing these challenges. Switzerland, with its strong focus on civic engagement and its experience in participative urban development, plays a key role in catalysing action to create healthier urban environments in low- and middle-income countries.

The 2030 Agenda calls for a more integrated approach of the United Nations Development System (UNDS) in the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. There is a promising constellation of UN leadership and member states’ reform decisions to make the UN more efficient and effective. This contribution will accelerate the reforms through financing of integrated sustainable development solutions by UN Country Teams targeting those most left behind.

BACKUP Health Technical support for Global Fund country partners

Switzerland supports The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria with 64 million CHF for three years (2020-2022). As the Fund is a global financing mechanism without country presence that provides grants to recipient countries. The BACKUP Health initiative strives to strengthen governments and other national stakeholders in such way that they embed Global Fund grant proposals in broader health sector priorities.

Conserving Forests through sustainable forest-based Enterprise Support in Tanzania

The CoForEST project contributes to the reduction of deforestation by incentivizing rural communities to retain their natural forests. This exit phase aims to expand a successful and sustainable community-based forest management model that generates significant livelihood benefits for both women and men. Linkages with initiatives supported by the Global Program on Climate Change seek to influence policies and financial mechanisms.

Contribution to the Global Partnership to End Violence against Children and the Safe to Learn Initiative

At least a billion children are exposed to violence yearly. Recognizing its devastating impact, world leaders committed in 2015 to end all forms of violence against children by 2030. This resulted in the launch of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children. It aims to contribute to a “world in which every child grows up free from violence”. A key pillar is the Partnership’s Safe to Learn Initiative that aims to end violence in and through education. Through this support Switzerland contributes to both the SDG 16 on Peace and SDG 4 on Education.

Dynamic electronic decision trees for managing childhood illness (DYNAMIC)

Every year, more than five million children die before the age of five due to preventable or treatable causes, most of them in developing countries. New technologies combined with rapid tests can improve diagnosis and management of sick children and reduce health costs. This collaborative research project makes use of Switzerland’s knowledge in digital technologies to improve the health of children and reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions in low resource settings.
