Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development - Research Module on Food Security

Achieving food security remains a global challenge. The SDC’s and the Swiss National Science Foundation’s (SNSF) joint r4d Program (Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development; www.r4d.ch) will promote research and innovation in agricultural and food systems to enhance food security in the context of global sustainable development. Researchers from Switzerland with their partners in Africa, Asia, and Latin America will jointly generate new insights and approaches that contribute to meet the global demand for food in an environmentally and socially sustainable way.

Global Mountain Forum (GMF) – Bridging Phase

SDC has a long history of supporting sustainable mountain development (SMD) efforts at different levels including the global policy level. Ever since, SDC has promoted policy dialogue and cooperation among different actors in order to promote SMD from global to regional, national, and local levels. Through the new institutional embedment of the mountain portfolio in the GPCC due to the internal shift of the responsibilities, a Bridging Phase is submitted to secure a continued support to key strategic partners linked to SMD during the reorientation process of the SMD portfolio.

Strengthening the link between migration and development: testing an integrated service provider to Moldovan migrants and their communities (NEXUS)

Moldova is heavily affected by brain- and skills-drain/waste as a result of massive migration with over ¼ of its active population being abroad. Remittances support consumption-led economy growth, but their productive investment is less than 10%. This project explores the development potential of migration, by promoting circular migration practices and efficient accumulation and transfer of financial and human capital of migrants and Diaspora.

La gobernanza de la tierra constituye el núcleo de los desafíos del desarrollo en Camboya, Laos, Myanmar y Vietnam: la concesión de tierras destinadas a la agricultura familiar a inversores es el principal vector de la nueva pobreza e inseguridad alimentaria. El proyecto apoya la reforma reforzando la eficiencia de los actores de la reforma a través del aprendizaje, la creación de alianzas y la cooperación regional, así como fomentando el surgimiento de políticas y prácticas más favorables.

Support to the Mother and Child Health Department of the Medical University Simulation Centre of Moldova

The international evidence proves the effectiveness of training methods based on simulation in comparison with “traditional" education, improving the practical skills of medical staff. The project will support the introducing simulation training technologies in obstetric, gynecological, neonatal and pediatric emergencies and by this contributing to improving the high medical education in Moldova.

Vocational Skills Development

01.05.2013 - 29.02.2016

Vocational Skills Development (VSD) is a project which SDC is co-financing with GIZ from December 2013 to March 2016 (Phase 1). The project will pilot short-term skills development training and vocational career guidance aimed at women and men who are not eligible to enrol in the formal TVET sector. Interventions in six Western aimags, Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan and Choir will enhance the employability of around 5,000 rural and urban men and women who lack marketable skills required to be productively engaged in the economy.

Cocoa Value Chain

Cocoa produced in agroforestry systems, mostly by smallholders in Nicaragua and Honduras, substantially increases employment and income generation as well as food security. This project links and capacitates key actors of the cocoa value chain in both countries and at the regional level. It promotes public-private partnerships to benefit 3’000 small cocoa producers and their families.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

Due to an accelerated urbanization process, Bolivia is facing very strong environmental problems. Poor management of large amounts of sewage and garbage are affecting the health of the population in intermediary cities. In the next 4 years, solid waste management SWM and wastewater treatment WWT will be comprehensively addressed, providing adequate infrastructure, enhancing local capacities, and promoting civil society’s participation in 20 municipalities, reducing pollution and improving the health of 240.000 people.

Kantha Bopha Hospitals Cambodia

The Kantha Bopha Hospitals in Cambodia treat 80% of severely ill children in Cambodia on an inpatient and an outpatient basis. It offers quality health care free of charge and trains Cambodian doctors as part of their university training program with 6 months internships. The KBH are usually the first ones to detect and signal epidemics which can be tackled early by health authorities. The KBH are a major partner of the Cambodian public health system.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development in Rural Areas (PYMERURAL)

Inclusive value chain development became a public policy priority in both Nicaragua and Honduras. PYMERURAL has been supporting institutions at national and local level to achieve greater competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises through local economic and value chain development (increased access to market opportunities, to services, improved regulatory and governance conditions). This short exit phase aims to further consolidate and scale up achievements.
