The Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York promotes Switzerland's interests at the UN Headquarters, in line with the country’s foreign policy goals. It participates in the work of the UN’s principal organs (General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council) as well as in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Switzerland is involved in negotiating and adopting resolutions and decisions in all the main bodies of the UN, with the exception of the Security Council, of which it is not a member. In addition, the Permanent Mission liaises with representatives of other member states, the UN Secretariat and civil society. On thematic issues, Switzerland participates fully in the three pillars of the UN mandate: peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.
