The Swiss Citizen Services supports the network of representations (embassies and consulates) abroad. It secures the provision of efficient consular services. If Swiss citizens are in need of assistance due to an emergency situation abroad - e.g. accident or arrest - it coordinates activities between the involved representations and organisations abroad, the authorities and relatives in Switzerland.

Its organisational units include Citizen Services and Support for Representations, Consular Protection as well as Social security for Swiss citizens abroad. It is also linked to the FDFA Helpline, which as central contact point deals with matters relating to consular services. The Helpline is manned around the clock 365 days a year.
