An upgraded version of the City of Zrenjanin website available to citizens

On 13th February, a new upgraded version of the City of Zrenjanin and City Assembly of Zrenjanin website was officially launched. The website will enable citizens to be better informed about the work of local government representatives, get in touch with them and make suggestions.


Serbia’s reform of the Law on Referenda and Civic Initiatives

The Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self Government (MPALSG), supported by the Government of Switzerland, has been working on reform of the Law on Referendum and Civic Initiatives. Earlier this year, MPALSG representatives visited Switzerland to learn more about good practices when it comes to referenda and civic initiatives. They have also benefited from analytical support in the course of writing the recent draft law. The draft law has been presented for public discussion. After integrating the public’s input, the MPALSG intends to put the draft law into the Parliamentary procedure.



More involvement of citizens in local government decision-making

Through the "Property Tax Reform" Program, supported by the Government of Switzerland, 44 Serbian municipalities adopted action plans in which, for the first time, they have clearly defined when and how to involve citizens in the decision-making process of creating an investment part of the budget. The practice so far has shown that citizens are most interested in infrastructure issues that improve their life quality – the reconstruction of kindergartens, cultural centers and libraries, as well as construction of a walkways and streets.


Dog Shelter in Vlasotince Example of Good Practice

At the first national competition for best practices in local governments, the first place in the category „Accountability and rule of law“ went to the municipality of Vlasotince. The reward was givent to a dog shelter that was opened last year.


Swiss Support to Serbia: "Soft Power" for more Youth Jobs

Switzerland, with its quite background, is perceived as a country with a “soft power”. Their dual education system and vocational education is welcomed with great sympathy in Serbia.

This is how the Swiss National Television SRF reported about one of projects supported by Switzerland and conducted in Serbia. The daily news program “10 vor 10” told a story about a women from a town of Krusevac that was successfully employed through the project “Education to Employment”. 


Science and Technology Park Belgrade marks great success in 2018

In the Science and Technology Park (STP) Belgrade, the annual report for the work of that institution has been presented in the presence of the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, Mladen Sarcevic. During last year, results have been impressive – STP has been supporting the development of more than 70 high-tech companies, 20 new start-up companies have been founded, along with 30 trainings for entrepreneurship development and 200 future entrepreneurs passed training according to the “lean” technology.


Swiss support to energy efficiency measures yields significant savings

Minister of Mining and Energy, Mr. Antic, Deputy Mayor of Belgrade, Mr. Vesic, and Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office, Ms. Hägler, visit Laza Lazarevic hospital in Padinska Skela where energy efficiency measures are being finalized. The annual energy savings for the hospital will be 40% after implementation of the energy efficiency measures.

“Balcanica Superior” – Regional brand of Eastern Serbia

“Balcanica Superior” is a certification trademark which guarantees that branded product or service is of a certain degree of quality and that it originates from Eastern Serbia and improves reputation, visibility and credibility on the market. The brand name, supported by the Government of Switzerland, can be used by companies that provide accommodation and food preparation services or have products of a clear regional character and which fulfil the defined set of criteria. So far, Balcanica Superior certificates were awarded to ten local companies which can present themselves under that name.


Toward better transparency of local finances

The campaign “Let’s get TO KNOW each other” will promote good practices of transparent public finance management from Krusevac, Leskovac, Loznica, Ruma and Uzice. The aim of this promotional campaign is to inspire municipalities and cities from all over Serbia to follow the example of the above-mentioned local self-governments, and to encourage citizens to become more involved in the planning and allocation of local budgets.


Dual education – investment, not an expense

Dr. Ursula Renold, professor at the ETH University in Zurich and head of the research department for dual education, took part at the conference on dual education organized by the Swiss-Serbian Chamber of Commerce in Belgrade. In the same week, Dr. Renold took part in the work of the Serbian Government Commission for dual education, as the only external honorary member. Dr. Renold and her team from the KOF Institute are providing expert advice to the Serbian Ministry of Education and the Commission on the future governance of the new law on dual education. This is part of the Swiss support project “Policy advice for efficient VET reform in Serbia” implemented by the Center for Education Policy from Belgrade in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Swiss KOF.
