Project completed

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. Background

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has a global mandate to lead and coordinate international efforts to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard their rights and well-being as laid down in the 1951 Refugee Convention and in the 1967 Protocol, which describe the rights of refugees, asylum-seekers and stateless persons as well as the obligations of states.

Objectives

Providing immediate protection and assistance to refugees and internally displaced people in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies.

Target groups

Refugees and internally displaced people worldwide.

Medium-term outcomes

Through its support, Switzerland contributes to the improvement of the international protection of refugees and to the search for durable solutions. It aims first and foremost to support UNHCR in the implementation of its core mandate and its commitment to the strengthening of the humanitarian coordination mechanism.

Results

Results from previous phases:

Syria crisis: previous financial multilateral contributions to UNHCR within the frame of the Syria crisis were instrumental in supporting the UNHCR in launching its cash assistance program in Jordan (regional refugee response) and in reaching the affected population in Syria with NFIs, and more particularly for winterization.
