Business activity in Egypt

In 2024, Egypt is the second-largest economy in Africa by GDP and is active in the areas of service industry, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, infrastructure, and energy. With a domestic consumer base of over 100 million people, Egypt’s strategic position serves as a “gateway to Africa” for many Swiss companies.

Bilateral economic agreements

Switzerland and Egypt share a comprehensive economic framework that includes a free trade agreement (FTA) via the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), an investment protection agreement, and a double taxation agreement. In January 2025 Switzerland and Egypt signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Joint Economic Commission (JEC) to intensify economic relations between the two countries.

Bilateral trade and investment

Egypt remains Switzerland's top export destination in Africa. In 2023, the total trade volume between the two countries amounted to CHF 1.6 billion. Exports from Switzerland to Egypt added up to CHF 1.16 billion in 2023, while imports from Egypt to Switzerland amounted to CHF 486.1 million. Swiss investments remain considerable and well-diversified. According to the Central Bank of Egypt, capital inflows from Switzerland reached USD 676.4 million. Switzerland came 7th in terms of largest capital inflows to Egypt in the FY2021/22.

The quality of Swiss products is highly valued and Switzerland is a trusted trading partner. Around 100 Swiss companies, subsidiaries, and partners of Swiss companies are currently conducting business in Egypt. They are at the forefront of expanding local production, particularly in the pharmaceutical, food, and textile sectors. Strong trade financing partners and support by the Swiss Export Risk Insurance (SERV) are comparative advantages for Swiss companies.

Institutional presence

The Embassy, in close coordination with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), supports Swiss companies in Egypt on a case-by-case basis. The principle of subsidiarity applies: The Embassy may support a company if the latter cannot reasonably be expected, or is not in a position, to safeguard its interests itself or with the help of a third party. In its support, the Embassy applies the principle of competitive neutrality.

In January 2022, SwissCham Egypt replaced the Swiss Egyptian Business Association. SwissCham Egypt is a non-profit organization and aims to promote the business opportunities and interests of Swiss and Egyptian companies through expert service and engagement.
