The Embassy of Switzerland is hosting a photography workshop in Cairo from 23 – 31 May leading up to the launch of a street photography exhibition titled “I understand. Do you?” on June 3, aimed at raising public awareness of deafness.

Cairo, Egypt - Swiss photographer Denis Ponté is collaborating with 5 young Egyptian photographers to portray powerful black-and-white images of individuals using sign language, the method of communication for those with hearing impairment.

The Ambassador of Switzerland to Egypt, Markus Leitner, will be present along with Denis Ponté, the participating photographers, and individuals with hearing impairments. The evening will provide an opportunity to discuss the project and view the large photographs exhibited along the walls of the Embassy’s Office for International Cooperation.

“Art is one of the most powerful ways to raise awareness of public health issues, such as deafness. The Embassy’s project aims to give a voice to the hearing-impaired community of Egypt. The photographs will allow all passersby to notice and interact with the images, thereby raising awareness on deafness,” said Ambassador Markus Leitner.
