Switzerland @ 3rd Smart Cities India 2017 Expo

The Smart Cities India 2017 Expo in New Delhi attracted 15’000 participants in three days. Many of them visited the Swiss pavilion. The audience also followed the session “Swiss innovations for smart cities in India”.

Third Media Workshop on Climate Change Reporting in the Indian Himalayas

A three-day media workshop to encourage accurate reporting of climate change impacts and adaptation measures in North-East India was held from 25-27 March 2017 in Gangtok, Sikkim. The workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Janine Kuriger, Head Swiss Cooperation Office and Counsellor, Embassy of Switzerland in India, in the presence of Mr. D.C. Sharma, Senior Science and Environment Journalist; Ms. Annu Anand, Head Advocacy, Center for Media Studies (CMS); and Dr. Surajit Baruah, State Project Manager, Sikkim, Strengthening State Strategies for Climate Change Adaptation (3SCA). The valedictory address was delivered by Mr. Prem Das Rai, Member of Parliament from Sikkim.

SDC organises a workshop on resilience through risk transfer and microinsurance

A workshop on “Resilience through Risk Transfer and Microinsurance” was held in New Delhi. The workshop examined how access to innovative insurance solutions along with value added services can protect smallholder farmers against losses due to climate variability and change. The workshop was organised as part of the “Climate Resilience through Risk Transfer” (RES-RISK) project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Switzerland supports four Indian cities in addressing future challenges related to climate change

A multi-year cooperation project for Capacity Building for Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development (CapaCITIES) was officially launched in Udaipur. Under the project, which is financed by the Swiss Agency of Development and Cooperation (SDC), technical assistance in the areas of city planning, solid waste management, sewage treatment, water availability, building energy efficiency and mobility will be provided to the cities of Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Rajkot (Gujarat), Siliguri (West Bengal) and Udaipur (Rajasthan).

Odisha village adopts renewable energy to power women micro enterprise

A 25kWe capacity two-stage biomass power gasifier supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) was inaugurated on December 24, 2016 in village Bilaput, Nandapur block of Koraput, Odisha. The renewable energy biomass gasifier power plant was inaugurated by Mr. Prafulla Kumar Pangi, MLA Pottangi, together with Mrs. Laxmi Hantal, Chairperson, Nandapur Block Panchayat Samiti, Dr. Shirish Sinha, Deputy Director of Cooperation, SDC and Mr. Amit Kumar, Senior Director, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Power Minister calls for new buildings to be more energy efficient

Mr. Piyush Goyal, Honourable Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Government of India (GoI), today inaugurated a three-day international conference on Energy Efficient Building Design: Experiences and Way Forward. The gathering brings together 150 building energy experts from both India and overseas to exchange knowledge and experience on some of the key aspects of building energy efficiency. It is organized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the aegis of the Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP).

Switzerland and India sign joint declaration on introduction of AEOI

On 22 November 2016, Switzerland and India signed a joint declaration on the introduction of the automatic exchange of information (AEOI) in tax matters on a reciprocal basis. Both countries intend to start collecting data in accordance with the global AEOI standard in 2018 and to exchange it from 2019 onwards.

Side event on low carbon cement at climate change conference in Marrakech

After entry into force of the landmark Paris Agreement, the international community is meeting from 7 to 18 November in Marrakech in order to further clarify the modalities for the implementation of the new climate agreement. The conference also provides a platform for showcasing promising technologies and their contribution towards combating climate change. In this context, the SDC funded Low Carbon Cement project will be presented at a side event on 16th November 2016 (Green Zone, Room Draa, 3 pm to 4.30 pm) organized by the Development Alternatives Group in association with EPFL, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay, TARA and CIDem. 

Pathways to Abolition of the Death Penalty

The Swiss Foreign Ministry (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs//FDFA), together with Death Penalty Worldwide at Cornell Law School, launched this year a study of the factors leading states to abolish capital punishment in law. “Pathways to Abolition of the Death Penalty” examines the historical and political processes underlying abolition, including the roles played by key actors and stakeholders in the countries concerned. The publication covers 14 different jurisdictions*, spread across a range of geographical world regions and time periods, from the world’s first full legal abolition in Venezuela in 1863 to most recent abolition success stories (Fiji, Suriname, Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Benin and Maryland).
