On 3 April 2025, the Federal Council decided to step up contacts with the United States with a view to identifying solutions to issues relating particularly to trade, economics and finance. Beyond the intense activities already undertaken, the Federal Council decided at its meeting on 9 April to establish a steering body, which will involve all departments and the Federal Chancellery, with a view to strengthening the management of such issues at political and operational level.

This steering body will commence work immediately and operate until the end of the year. It comprises a core group, a broader group and a special envoy for the US and will be led by head of the FDFA, Ignazio Cassis.

The Federal Council has decided to appoint Ambassador Gabriel Lüchinger, head of the FDFA's International Security Division, to serve as the Federal Council's special envoy to the US. This temporary structure will provide a targeted, additional channel of contact focusing on international security.
