The health challenges remain immense: people are still dying of HIV – one person every minute – and malaria is putting the health of almost half the world's population at risk. These diseases hit the poorest communities hardest and compromise socio-economic development. The Global Fund has already helped save 65 million lives since 2002. Switzerland's renewed commitment will help it make further progress and develop new approaches to prevention and treatment.
A sign of optimism for international cooperation
At a time when crises are mounting and multilateralism is in turmoil, Switzerland's support sends out a clear signal: international solidarity is not only possible, but effective! By focusing on inclusive partnerships that bring together governments, the private sector, scientific communities, civil society and, above all, the people affected by the diseases, Switzerland is contributing to global, sustainable and inclusive responses.
The Global Fund, a Swiss not-for-profit foundation based in Geneva, is an independent international funding mechanism with an annual budget of around USD 5 billion. It focuses on the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, while strengthening health systems in low and middle-income countries and supporting the response to COVID-19. As a major actor in access to healthcare, it is one of the main suppliers of diagnostics and treatments, which it helps to distribute more widely while driving innovation. Since its founding in 2002, it has saved 65 million lives and reduced the combined mortality rate for these three diseases in the countries concerned by 61%.
By providing its support, the Federal Council is also strengthening the unique ecosystem of International Geneva, where diplomacy, science, business and civil society join forces to develop concrete solutions to the challenges of global health.
With this investment, Switzerland is continuing its support for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, and confirming that in an uncertain world, international cooperation remains the surest path to greater health, justice and hope.
