Eighteen-year-old student J. Janlav-Oidov, who completed four sets of tasks earning an overall score of 700 points, won Mongolia’s first medal at the event that is dubbed the “Olympics of Skill”.
At the 2017 event, held in October in Abu Dhabi, Mongolian students showcased their skills in the following six categories: Welding, bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry, cooking and electrical installation. A medal of excellence is earned when a competitor achieves the “international standard” in their particular discipline.

Mongolia first took part in WorldSkills in 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, becoming the 69th country to join the competition. From the traditional to multi-skilled technology professions in the industry and service sectors, the WorldSkills competition is not only an Olympics of skills but is a great way to see international standards.

The Mongolian team was able to take part in the 44th WorldSkills competition thanks to the multilateral efforts of the Mongolian Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, international donors and the private sector. The Vocational Skills Development (VSD) Project greatly contributed to the team’s training and preparation, in addition to their core activities. Four out of the six participants to Worldskills are students of training institutions which are beneficiaries of the Project.

The VSD Project supports Mongolia in reforming the vocational education and trainings towards demand-driven and practical system. The project works with 11 vocational schools and colleges to improve teaching capacities and training curricula for long and short term skills trainings, to upgrade the workshops and tools.

It is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The project also supports skills development activities in Umnugovi aimag with co-financing from the Australian government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in partnership with an Australian Technical and Further Education Institution.
