Welcome

Greetings from the Head of Mission

Dear visitor to the website of the Swiss Embassy in Abuja, responsible for Nigeria, Chad, Niger and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), welcome!

This Embassy is in charge of diplomatic, economic and cultural relations with the three states mentioned above and follows the work of the organization of ECOWAS. In addition to the Embassy in Abuja, there is a Swiss Consulate General in Lagos, which operates under the authority of this Embassy. Furthermore, there are Swiss Development Cooperation offices in Niamey (Niger) and N'Djamena (Chad) which report to it for diplomatic matters.

By far the most important, not surprisingly, are the relations with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is home to over 200 million people, spread across 36 federal states. With a GDP of over 440 billion US dollars, Nigeria is the largest economy on the entire African continent. The country has considerable natural resources, primarily oil and natural gas, but also numerous other minerals. It also has an important manufacturing industry where numerous Swiss companies are investing.

While Abuja is the federal capital and Nigeria's administrative center, Lagos with its population of around 25 million remains the country's economic hub. It is there that most of the subsidiaries of the Swiss companies that are active in Nigeria are established. Lagos is also home to a thriving financial sector and to an emerging FinTech industry. Nigeria is Switzerland's most important oil supplier.

Switzerland and Nigeria enjoy solid, friendly relations that have been steadily growing in intensity over the last two decades. Their cooperation covers as divers areas as mutual legal assistance, education, research and innovation, migration, humanitarian aid, peace building and, of course, support for Swiss-based companies. There are currently some 200 Swiss nationals living in Nigeria. Approximately 2'100 Nigerian citizens live in Switzerland.

This website contains further information on the various fields of activity of this representation. Should you require further information, please feel free to contact the Embassy staff or the responsible Departments and Federal Offices of the Swiss Confederation.

I wish you an informative stay on our website.
