Swiss-Russian relations: Didier Burkhalter and Sergey Lavrov to meet on Monday in Moscow

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, will visit Moscow on Monday for a working visit during which he will hold talks with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. The talks will include bilateral relations between Switzerland and Russia and will give the two ministers the opportunity to exchange views on a number of major current international issues.

Switzerland steps up support for OSCE monitoring mission and further de-escalation measures in Ukraine

In his opening speech to the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, President Didier Burkhalter, called for efforts to improve implementation of the de-escalation measures in Ukraine and to step up support for the OSCE special monitoring mission and the Trilateral Contact Group. Switzerland has earmarked an additional CHF 2 million to support efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Some 50 foreign ministers of OSCE states to attend the 2014 Ministerial Council meeting in Basel

The annual meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will take place on 4 and 5 December 2014 in Basel at the invitation of the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship. The discussions of this central decision-making and management body of foreign ministers of OSCE participating States wilI focus on the situation in Ukraine on the first day and on combating international terrorism on the second. A civil society forum will take place in the run-up to the meeting on 3 December. The greater involvement of civil society – and young people – in the work of the OSCE is a priority of the 2014 Swiss Chairmanship.

President Didier Burkhalter, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer and Federal Councillor Alain Berset, who are the respective heads of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), met with the athletes who participated in the Olympic Winter Games and the Paralympics in Sochi in 2014 at a reception held today in the Parliament Building to congratulate them for their achievements.

Federal Council addresses the situation in Ukraine

The Federal Council today has condemned Russia’s annexation of Crimea. It has taken note of the sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States, and has decided to take all measures necessary to prevent Switzerland from being used to evade any of these sanctions. It will also strengthen coordination between the federal departments to analyse and monitor the situation in Ukraine.

President of the Swiss Confederation arrives in Sochi for the opening of the Winter Olympics

Following his visit to Japan, President Didier Burkhalter arrived in Sochi on Friday for the opening of the Winter Olympics and to launch celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Russia. Mr Didier Burkhalter, accompanied by his wife, will head to Fisht stadium to attend the opening ceremony of the XXII Olympic Winter Games.

Our winter sports athletes have gotten off to a very good start this season, giving us reason to hope for numerous medals, which will be celebrated in the House of Switzerland Russia 2014 at the heart of the Olympic Park. Proud of its traditions yet focused on innovation, Switzerland will take advantage of this global media event to showcase its economic, political, touristic and scientific strengths to visitors of the Olympic Games. During the games, Switzerland will also kick off the celebrations – in the presence of the president of the Swiss Confederation – to mark 200 years of bilateral relations with Russia.

Swiss government names new Ambassadors

The Swiss government (Federal Council) has approved the list of diplomatic staff transfers scheduled for 2014 submitted by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The changes will be made in accordance with the normal rate of transfers, to be communicated at the time of the decision by the Federal Council. The appointments of Heads of Mission take effect as soon as the authorities in the host country communicate their approval. The Federal Council takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to the Ambassadors due to retire for the services rendered.

Official working visit of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in Switzerland

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Neuchâtel on 12 April 2013 for official talks. The discussions at this working visit focused on bilateral cooperation. In addition, international and multilateral issues were also among the themes discussed, notably Switzerland’s OSCE Chairmanship slated for 2014, and the situation in the Southern Caucasus and in Syria.
