South Sudan Humanitarian Fund, Contribution 2017

The SSHF is a multi-donor pooled fund that supports the timely allocation and disbursement of donor resources to humanitarian partners to respond to the most critical humanitarian needs in a strategic and coordinated manner. With contributions to several Clusters, the Cooperation Office in Juba has strategic interest in supporting the coordination of the numerous humanitarian interventions in South Sudan, which is a key for an effective response to the current crises.

The project in brief

Background	The food security situation in South Sudan has progressively deteriorated since the outbreak of conflict in 2013. Across the country, the years of conflict have severely undermined crop production and depleted livelihood options. 4.9 million people are estimated severely food insecure from February to April 2017. This number is projected to increase to 5.5 million people at the height of the 2017 lean season, i.e. in July. 100’000 people are facing starvation in parts of South Sudan where famine was declared. The magnitude of these food insecure populations is unprecedented across all periods.
Objectives	Timely allocation and disbursement of donor resources to humanitarian partners in South Sudan to respond to the most critical humanitarian needs in a strategic and coordinated manner.
Target groups	The allocation and disbursement of joint donor resources aim at meeting the most critical needs and therefore target the most vulnerable persons.
Medium-term outcomes	Projects directly addressing life-threatening needs and aiming at saving lives and alleviating suffering have been implemented.
Results	Expected results: Provision of life-saving emergency assistance for relevant projects within the Cluster system. Results from previous phases: Total income for 2016: USD 93.6 million. 67 partner organisations (24 NNGOs, 36 INGOs and 7 UN partners) implemented 211 projects. Funds were allocated to the following Clusters: WASH, Nutrition, Health, ES & NFI, FSL, Protection, logistics, Education, CCCM and ETC.
