Switzerland is committed nationally and internationally to fight against illicit financial flows, like money laundering and terrorist financing. The Memorandum of Understanding signed today is intended to support the Tanzanian government in its efforts to combat corruption. The memorandum does not create any new right or obligations with regard to international mutual assistance in criminal matters, but it does introduce some key administrative and organizational changes to ensure efficient cooperation. In particular, central authorities of both states will be able to deal with each other directly and support each other in the drafting of requests for legal assistance in future. The appendix to the memorandum also includes model requests which satisfy the formal requirements of both states.

In her remarks, Ambassador Tinguely Mattli said the MoU marks the starting point into a new era of bilateral cooperation between Switzerland and Tanzania. “Switzerland is willing to support the Government of Tanzania in its fight against corruption, which is key for economic development. By signing this important agreement today as we celebrate 50 years of bilateral cooperation, we decide to further strengthen our ties of friendship, cooperation and mutual confidence.”
