Swiss Embassy joins charity walk to raise funds for earthquake victims

On September 17, the Swiss Embassy in Tanzania joined the ‘Walk for Kagera’ charity walk to help raise funds for earthquake victims in Kagera Region.

The staff of the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania were joined by members of the Swiss Community and Swiss Business Community in the country for the charity walk which was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation together with Prime Minister’s Office. Swiss Embassy staff donated TZS 1.3 million towards the cause. The funds were handed over to the Ministry by Swiss Ambassador H.E. Florence Tinguely Mattli on the same day. 

The 5 km charity walk attracted local residents, private and government institutions, non-governmental organisations, diplomatic missions and religious bodies. The earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred on September 10 in Kagera Region left at least 19 people dead and over 400 injured. A total of 840 houses were destroyed and 1264 others seriously damaged leaving thousands of people homeless.
