Governmental meeting of the Joint Economic Commission Switzerland-Ukraine

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by Nataliya Mykolska, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Representative of Ukraine, while the Swiss delegation was headed by Livia Leu, Ambassador, Head of Bilateral Economic Relations, State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and Delegate of the Federal Council for Trade Agreements.

The Parties welcomed the 11th joint meeting of the Commission and their expressed their confidence in its positive effects on the development of cooperation.

Swiss Humanitarian Transport to Eastern Ukraine

The Government of Switzerland conducted its fifth humanitarian transport to Eastern Ukraine. In total 3’500 tons of quartz sand for water filtration are being delivered to Donetsk city. The sand was transported in 50 wagons all the way from a sand pit in Vinnitsya region to the premises of the water utility Vodadonbasa. It was already the second time that Switzerland used the railway to transport humanitarian goods across the line of contact. By supporting Vodadonbasa, Swiss Humanitarian Aid makes a tangible contribution to the functioning of the public water supply system in the Donetsk region, thereby helping to sustain the unhindered and continued access of the local population on both sides of the line of contact to drinking water.

Ukraine: Swiss aid consignment reaches Donbass waterworks

Switzerland has sent a further aid consignment to eastern Ukraine, comprising 3,500 tonnes of quartz sand for filtering water. The sand is needed by the Donbass waterworks for treating drinking water. Millions of people on both sides of the contact line depend on this supply of water.

Swiss humanitarian train reached the Eastern Ukraine

From 23 to 25 May 2016, the Government of Switzerland delivered 720 tons of humanitarian goods with a total value of USD 1.3 million to partner institutions in Eastern Ukraine. In accordance with Swiss principles of humanitarian aid, the population on both sides of the contact line will benefit from this transport. A train with 8 wagons of chemicals for water treatment has reached the city of Donetsk today coming from Polohy in the Zaporizhia oblast. For the first time since the start of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine the railway was used to transport humanitarian goods across the line of contact. In addition, Switzerland delivered 15 trucks loaded with humanitarian goods to institutions in government controlled area.


New aid consignment on its way to Donetsk

Since 22 May 2016, two Swiss Humanitarian Aid convoys carrying chemicals for water treatment and medical goods have been on their way to the conflict zone in Ukraine. Part of the consignment, containing medical supplies and medicines, will be delivered to the hospital in Kurakhove this morning. In addition, rail transport is being used for the first time.

Joint Statement on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

Today, May 17, is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.  As representatives of the international community and our respective governments in Ukraine, we hereby reaffirm our commitment to the protection of human rights and the right of citizens to peaceful assembly.  We also recognize that the values of tolerance and respect for diversity are fundamental to open democratic societies.  As such, we collectively urge the police and Kyiv city officials to support and protect the right of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) persons and their supporters to conduct a March for Equality, planned for June 12, 2016.  We also ask that all Ukrainians respect the right of their fellow citizens to peaceful assembly.  The same appeal applies to other locations in Ukraine where similar events may be planned.
