Switzerland and Ukraine strengthen bilateral relations

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, spent Wednesday, the second day of his visit to Ukraine, in discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, Swiss aid, efforts to ensure peace in Ukraine and strengthening cooperation in the field of migration. Mr Burkhalter met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkine, Minister for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons Vadym Chernysh, and representatives of the Ukrainian civil society.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), began a two-day visit to Ukraine on Tuesday with the aim of strengthening relations between the two countries, discussing peace-building efforts and seeing first-hand what support is being provided by Swiss Humanitarian Aid, particularly in the areas of medical assistance and water purification in the Donetsk region.

On 6 June, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will travel to eastern Ukraine, where he will visit the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Mariupol and hold talks with partner organisations. In addition, he will deliver medical supplies to a hospital and see off a Swiss humanitarian aid convoy. On 7 June, Mr Burkhalter will meet Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Kyiv. He is also scheduled to meet with Vadym Chernysh, Minister for Temporary Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons, and with representatives of civil society.

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by Nataliya Mykolska, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Representative of Ukraine, while the Swiss delegation was headed by Livia Leu, Ambassador, Head of Bilateral Economic Relations, State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and Delegate of the Federal Council for Trade Agreements.

The Parties welcomed the 11th joint meeting of the Commission and their expressed their confidence in its positive effects on the development of cooperation.


Swiss Humanitarian Transport to Eastern Ukraine

The Government of Switzerland conducted its fifth humanitarian transport to Eastern Ukraine. In total 3’500 tons of quartz sand for water filtration are being delivered to Donetsk city. The sand was transported in 50 wagons all the way from a sand pit in Vinnitsya region to the premises of the water utility Vodadonbasa. It was already the second time that Switzerland used the railway to transport humanitarian goods across the line of contact. By supporting Vodadonbasa, Swiss Humanitarian Aid makes a tangible contribution to the functioning of the public water supply system in the Donetsk region, thereby helping to sustain the unhindered and continued access of the local population on both sides of the line of contact to drinking water.



Ukraine: Swiss aid consignment reaches Donbass waterworks

Switzerland has sent a further aid consignment to eastern Ukraine, comprising 3,500 tonnes of quartz sand for filtering water. The sand is needed by the Donbass waterworks for treating drinking water. Millions of people on both sides of the contact line depend on this supply of water.
