Switzerland hosts Ukraine Mine Action Conference 2024 in Lausanne

On 17 and 18 October 2024, the Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC2024) will be held at the EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne. The aim of the conference, which is being co-organised with Ukraine, is to highlight the critical importance of humanitarian demining as part of the country's social and economic recovery. The conference by Lake Geneva will bring together representatives from governments, international organisations, humanitarian demining and civil society.


Switzerland to increase financial support for Ukraine

Switzerland is to contribute CHF 96.11 million to the increase in capital of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for Ukraine. The Federal Council adopted the corresponding dispatch on 13 September, thus strengthening Switzerland’s commitment to Ukraine.


Jacques Gerber appointed Federal Council Delegate for Ukraine

Bern, 04.09.2024 – At its meeting on 4 September 2024, the Federal Council appointed Jacques Gerber to act as Federal Council Delegate for Ukraine. Mr Gerber, who is currently councillor of state for the canton of Jura, will carry out preparatory work for and manage the Federal Council's consolidated 'Ukraine country programme'. The 51-year-old will take up his new post on 1 January 2025.


No lifting of protection status S

The situation in Ukraine is not expected to change in the foreseeable future. The Federal Council therefore decided at its meeting on 4 September not to lift the protection status S for Ukrainian refugees before 4 March 2026 and to extend the support measures for this group of people (Programme S) until then.




Communities in Sumy, Kherson, Khmelnytskyi and Chernihiv regions are invited to participate in the competition and implement digitalization projects

With funding from Switzerland, the EGAP Program, implemented by the East Europe Foundation and in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation, announces a competition for the selection of 16 territorial communities in the Sumy, Kherson, Khmelnytskyi and Chernihiv regions to implement the digitization projects.

Ukraine: Federal Council wants to involve private sector more in recovery efforts

The Swiss private sector is to play a key role in Ukraine's recovery. Switzerland's Federal Council plans to make CHF 500 million available over the next four years to better involve the private sector in these efforts. The funds will come from the CHF 1.5 billion earmarked for Ukraine in the International Cooperation Strategy 2025–28. In addition, the Federal Council intends to provide CHF 66 million to support early recovery in the east of the country as well as the reconstruction and modernisation of basic infrastructure in the areas of energy security, water supply and public transport. All of this was decided by the Federal Council at its meeting on 26 June 2024.


States at Summit on Peace in Ukraine agree on common positions and next steps

At the close of the Summit on Peace in Ukraine on Sunday, 16 June, the vast majority of participating states agreed on jointly formulated positions and next steps with a view to a future peace process. President Viola Amherd commended the joint communiqué that emerged from the Bürgenstock summit as a strong signal from the international community for peace based on international law and the UN Charter. 92 states from all regions of the world took part in the summit, 57 of which were represented by heads of state and government.


Switzerland receives 100 state guests for Summit on Peace in Ukraine

President Viola Amherd will open the summit on peace in Ukraine on Saturday, 15 June. 100 delegations will attend the summit, including 57 heads of state and government from around the world. The aim of the summit is to initiate a peace process, generate trust and outline ideas for the next steps towards such a process. All states present should be given the opportunity to put forward their visions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
