Contesto |
Typhoon Yagi, hit the northern region on 7 September 2024, causing five days of heavy rain, widespread flooding and landslides. Rivers rose above critical levels, causing severe flooding, particularly in rural and coastal areas, where homes and farmland were severely damaged. Early warnings and evacuations reduced casualties, but the typhoon displaced thousands of people and caused significant damage to infrastructure and farmland, estimated at VNĐ50 trillion (US$2 billion). The storm affected 3.6 million people in 26 provinces, causing 307 deaths, more than 1,900 injuries and damaging more than 240,000 homes, schools and health facilities. More than 72,000 people are now in need of shelter, with overcrowded evacuation centres increasing the risks for vulnerable groups such as women and children. Many poor households, already vulnerable, do not have the resources to rebuild. Following the successful completion of the SET phase on 30 September, this intervention will mark Switzerland's contribution to the early recovery phase. |
