The political turmoil and conflicts in the south of the country in 2010 have unveiled the problem of unbalanced regional development. The government admits the need to develop the regions economically but lacks resources. Therefore the role of the private sector as the main driving force to generate jobs in rural areas, is important. To this end SDC has launched project on small and medium sized enterprises development in the poorest districts - Alai and Chon Alai. These two districts are known to have been engaged in the conflicts in Osh in 2010.

Oxfam - Reducing Water and Sanitation Related Diseases through Access to WASH Practices for Conflict Affected Populations in Sa’da Governorate

The project is designed to sustain and expand access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices through the reconstruction of war damaged water supply facilities, the rehabilitation or construction of school latrines and training on maintenance on them as well as the provision of hygiene promotion activities to the most vulnerable girls, boys, women and men affected by protracted conflict and malnutrition in the northern Sahar District in Sa’da Governorate of Yemen, in order to reduce the incidence of water and sanitation related diseases. The project also aims to contribute to the empowerment of women and children through shortened distances to the dwellings as well as the promotion of hygiene aspects and the access to safe sanitation.

Platforms for Agricultural Research for Development

An improved participation of all agricultural stakeholders in research, innovation and development discussions is crucial for finding solutions to feed the 9 billion people in 2050. Therefore, two networks are supported to facilitate exchange of information and experience among agricultural stakeholders. One network addresses the youth in agricultural development worldwide with already 7200 members, and the other one Swiss actors in agricultural research for development.

Institutional Support to Standing Conferenceof Towns and Municipalities

Serbia remains fairly centralized while local governments have limited capacities. Division of tasks, responsibilities and competencies between municipalities and central state is important. The Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM), association of local governments in Serbia, strives to overcome gaps between central and local level. SDC supports SCTM advocacy department to represent municipalities before the central government and support its members to implement policies and regulations.

Advancing Land Use Rights and Natural Resources Benefits

Approved in 2009, the Mozambican legislation on land, forestry and fauna is considered as one of the most progressive in terms of protection of the interests of the local communities. However more than 14 years after its approval, the rights of the communities are still precarious. SDC program aims at advancing the land use rights of the local communities as a necessary asset for a more sustainable economic development.

Municipal Development in South and SouthWest Serbia - European PROGRES

The European Partnership with Municipalities Program funded by Switzerland, the EU and Serbia supports 34 underdeveloped municipalities in South and South West Serbia. The Program addresses municipal capacities to plan for development, attract investments and improves service delivery for 1 million citizens and the private sector in line with good governance pnnciples. It also contributes to enhanced multi-ethnic dialogue and improved cooperation between central and local governments.

Supporting the transition from emergency relief to reconstruction

The SDC implemented a number of projects in the Philippines between January and August 2014, during the transition phase from emergency relief to longer-term reconstruction. The priorities for Swiss Humanitarian Aid lay in the areas of rehabilitation and renovation, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). In total, around 33,000 people, including over 2,700 schoolchildren, received sustained support.

The CHF is a multi-donor pooled fund, managed under the direction of the Humanitarian Coordinator (HC). The fund finances projects of UN agencies, international and national non-governmental organizations. The CHF is used for timely allocation and disbursement of donor resources to the most urgent humanitarian needs and critical gaps in Sudan. The CHF meaningfully strengthens the response capacity and fosters at the same time greater sectoral responsibility and accountability – it has an important role in the current situation.
