Agriculture in Nepal is characterized by low growth and productivity, yet it still is the mainstay for 66% of the rural poor people. The small farmers will improve their productivity, income and food security thanks to the strengthening of a decentralized and pluralistic extension and research system, receptive to their needs and demands. Built on previous SDC interventions and in line with Nepal’s Agricultural Development Strategy, this system will also enhance their social inclusion.

Information management system on geogenic contaminants

An estimated 200 million people worldwide, roughly 5% of those who use groundwater for drinking, are exposed to elevated concentrations of arsenic or fluoride (geogenic contaminants), whose health effects are severe. This initiative, proposed by Eawag, aims to reduce disease caused by geogenic contamination through awareness creation among government institutions and donors. An interactive knowledge hub will provide global maps for arsenic and fluoride, and expertise for data analysis and recommendations for action. There will be active capacity building in selected affected hub countries in Asia and Africa.

Support to Community Forestry and Fisheries

SDC contributes to a program on Support to Community Forestry and Fisheries implemented in partnership with the Non Timber Forest Products Exchange Program. The program strengthens local communities to secure access to natural resources to improve food security and increase their income. It focuses on Kratié and Stung Treng provinces, which are rich in natural resources but where people suffer from high poverty rates.

Promotion of a Young Professional in the Health Domain

SDC has a growing Health portfolio. A young professional in the health domain was chosen for a three year work experience. After a first year at SDC’s HQ, the young professional spends the next two years gaining work experience in Tanzania, first at the local UNICEF Representation and then at the Swiss Cooperation Office in Dar-es-Salaam.

Enhancing agricultural water efficiency and productivity is imperative to mitigate water scarcity and to in-crease food security and income of small-scale farmers in the developing world. Implemented through FAO and the Partnership for agricultural water for Africa, the project will establish evidence based policy, good practice and investment in sustainable agricultural water management in Burkina Faso, Uganda, and Morocco as well as globally by linking catalytic activities to policy processes (e.g.to the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme).

The PADIT (Coordinated Platform Programme for the Comprehensive Development of the Territories) project is part of the decentralisation process that is currently underway in Cuba, strengthening capabilities for the management of local development and coordinating the three governmental levels (municipal, provincial, national). PADIT supports the implementation of inclusive social services and inter-municipal production activities as well as links between actors in the public, private and cooperative sectors, thus assisting 500,000 people, with particular focus on women and the young.

Réhabilitation du patrimoine culturel endommagé par le conflit au Nord du Mali

Suite à l’occupation des régions du Nord (Tombouctou, Gao et Kidal et une partie de la région de Mopti) par des groupes armés, le patrimoine culturel est gravement endommagé. Des mausolées sont détruits et une partie des manuscrits pillée, l’identité de ces régions touchée. La Suisse, à la suite de la visite du secrétaire d’Etat à Tombouctou, contribue sur deux ans à la remise en état du patrimoine culturel à travers le projet de l’UNESCO. Cette dynamique fédératrice participe à la revitalisation du tissu social et culturel du pays.

An island of medical care amidst a sea of displaced persons

In Minkamann, in the centre of South Sudan, five medical centres provide basic care to displaced persons, victims of the fighting which has been raging in the country since December 2013. Médecins Sans Frontières – Switzerland, supported by the SDC, carries out its work under constant pressure. One million South Sudanese have fled their homes.
