As government reforms struggle to take hold, Myanmar is at a turning point. Sixty years of mismanagement and civil strife have driven 32% of the population below the poverty line, with women and those in ethnic minority and conflict areas at higher risk. With its contribution to the multi-donor Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT), Switzerland helps improve livelihoods of two million rural poor, while helping shape pro-poor government development strategies.

ONI – Appui à l’Office National d’Identification (élections 2014)

La carte d'identification nationale (CIN), établie par l'Office National d'Identification (ONI) permet aux citoyens/-ennes haïtiens d’exercer leur droit de vote – mais aussi d’enregistrer une entreprise, d’ouvrir un compte bancaire, d’obtenir un emploi légal etc. Pour les élections sénatoriales partielles et locales – prévues entre avril et octobre 2014 – 500’000 citoyens/-ennes supplémentaires aux 5 millions d'adultes déjà enregistrés devraient recevoir une carte et ainsi le droit de vote et autres privilèges de la citoyenneté.

Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme

Launched by IFAD in 2012, the Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme (ASAP) aims at improving by 2020 the resilience to climate change of 8 million people who are living in poor smallholder farming communities. It will do so by delivering grants ranging between USD 3 and 15 millions to IFAD projects, where resilience is fully integrated into the wider IFAD country programme or project. ASAP is also expected to deliver co-benefits in terms of carbon sequestration and reduction in net emissions from agriculture, and to reduce the pressure on conversion of forests to agriculture use.

RECOFTC: Center for People and Forests

Deforestation and forest degradation are threatening the livelihoods of the rural poor in the Mekong region. Community forestry has proven to be a sustainable way to improve  forest management, strengthen local livelihoods, and mitigate impacts of climate change. SDC supports RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests to promote community forestry throughout the Mekong region through a core contribution.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Education for sustainable development (ESD) project is SDC and Government of Mongolia co-funded project that aims to mainstream ESD principles in Mongolia and to support creating legal and institutional framework that is conducive for sustainable development.

“Education for sustainable development” project will closely collaborate with 628 schools, government organizations, private sector and civil society organizations for promoting and mainstreaming sustainable development which defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs”.

Long-term support to UNRWA’s reform

Switzerland’s additional support to the General Fund of UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for the Palestine Refugees in the Near East) will enable the organization to further implement its development mandate and its reform agenda. The intervention focuses on the strengthening of the Agency’s internal management by supporting the completion of the Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) and on increasing the Agency’s funding by supporting its Resource Mobilization Strategy.

Quality apprenticeships for disadvantaged populations

The SDC is committed to developing quality vocational training that is adapted to the market in Myanmar. With this aim in mind, Swiss experts from the hotel industry have become involved. Apprenticeships for disadvantaged groups are funded in the capital and in the south-east of the country.
