Humanitarian and early recovery support to the floods in Kosovo
As a response to the severe flooding in 11 municipalities in Kosovo in January 2023, SDC supports the UN inter-agency appeal ‘Flood Response and Early Recovery Plan’ prepared by the UN Kosovo Team. The plan aims to directly target the humanitarian and early recovery needs of approximately 13’000 flood-affected people, including vulnerable groups.

Contexte | Early 2023 heavy rainfall caused flooding in the different Balkans countries. In Kosovo, increased levels of precipitation from January 17 to 22 caused severe flooding in 11 municipalities stretching from the northern to southern part of the country. According to initial reports from the municipalities, an estimated of 3,582 households, including 21,500 people, have been directly impacted. The reported damages are: destroyed houses, flooded agricultural land, severe damage to farms, infrastructure damage such as irrigation channels, dams, river bedding and water treatment facilities. The affected families have been initially evacuated and hosted on improvised public facilities, at their relatives or in hotels. Low-income communities and those with no adequate housing or with no steady income were severely impacted. The municipalities do not have the financial nor logistical means to cope with such natural disasters. Therefore, they rely on support from the Government of Kosovo (GoK) and the donors. |
