Macedonia includes three main hydro graphic catchment areas: the Vardar river, the Crni Drim and the Strumica area. The Bregalnica Rriver Basin is part of the Vardar river catchment area, comprising twelve municipalities with a total population of over 200?000 people. The river drains an area of 4?300 km2, and has an important function as drainage for wastewater and as water source for irrigation. In Berovo, SECO financed the first waste water treatment plant in the river basin. Following the flow of the river downstream, the next waste water treatment plant should be therefore located in the city of Kocani. |

This should promote the economic development of the region such as the industrial development, agriculture and tourism. |
