Marking the 20^th Anniversary of work and existence, the Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH, with the support of the OSCE Mission to BiH, organized the international conference “Equal in Diversity”. The conference gathered international experts and practitioners in the field of human rights, representatives of the national and regional institutions for human rights and equality, lawyers, judges, representatives of legislative and executive government, civil society organisations, international organisations, representatives of the academic community, etc., who contributed to the functioning of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH over the last 20 years.

The participants at the conference discussed about the realized level of human rights protection in BiH and challenges facing all relevant actors dealing with promotion, education and protection of human rights in the future, specifically in the context of European integration; elimination of discrimination and heightened sensitivity to vulnerable categories within a society.

The Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH was established based on Annex 6 of the Dayton Peace Agreement in 1996 in Sarajevo and Banja Luka. Dr Gret Haller from Switzerland was the first ombudsperson in BiH (1996-2000), appointed by the OSCE, while the institution functioned as an international organisation. During her mandate Dr Haller advocated the rule of law as basic precondition for the fulfillment of human rights for all citizens.

Having in mind her important role in first years of establishment of the Ombudsman office in BiH, Dr Haller was invited at the conference as one of the key note speaker. “Rule of law is basis for security of every state”, stated Dr Haller addressing participants under the panel „Role of the national human rights institutions in the protection and promotion of human rights in post conflict countries“.
