If you want to get married or enter into a registered partnership in Switzerland or abroad, your main contact is the registry office where you have decided to register your marriage or partnership. This is the office that determines the documents required and the conditions that apply. Please find out well in advance what formalities you will need to comply with and which civil status documents are needed.

If your marriage or partnership was registered abroad, it must be entered into the Swiss civil register by the proper authority in Switzerland. If it was registered in Switzerland, your change of civil status must be entered into the Register of the Swiss Abroad. In order to do so, you need to submit certain documents to your Swiss representation.

Until June 30^th 2022, if you marry someone of the same sex abroad, your marriage will be recognised in Switzerland as a registered partnership.
