Dr. Wanner met with his Japanese counterpart, the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority NRA, in order to discuss issues of common interest among nuclear regulators. He also met with the Executive Director of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan NUMO as well as with representatives of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency JAEA and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry METI. The aim of his visit was to have an exchange of views on issues pertaining to regulation, waste management and safety culture, as well as to gain insights into the state of rehabilitation work in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.
Dr. Wanner is also the Chairman of the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association WENRA. Japan became an observer in WENRA in October 2016.
