Bern, 07.08.2024 - President Viola Amherd travelled to Tokyo on Wednesday, 7 August to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. In honour of the 160th anniversary of bilateral relations, the talks focused on the further development of friendly ties between Switzerland and Japan, prospects in Europe and East Asia, and the global security architecture.

Bern, 29.07.2024 – President Viola Amherd will travel to Mongolia and Japan in early August with the aim of further strengthening Switzerland’s relations with these democratic East Asian nations. The two visits will provide an opportunity to celebrate long-standing relations: Switzerland has maintained bilateral relations with Mongolia for 60 years and with Japan for 160 years.

Olympic medalist and long-time friend of Switzerland Tomoka TAKEUCHI has been appointed as Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Higashikawa, where a ceremony was held on May 10, in presence of the Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan, Dr. Andreas Baum, Mr. Kimihito KUDO, Director General for Global Strategy, Department of Policy and Planning of Hokkaido Prefecture, Mr. Hirosuke IMAZU, Mayor of Asahikawa, Mr. Shin KIKUCHI, Mayor of Higashikawa, and other distinguished representatives.

The 19 March 2024 marked the official groundbreaking ceremony of the Swiss Pavilion on Yumeshima in Osaka. This is an important milestone on the road to Expo 2025. To celebrate the occasion, Presence Switzerland, the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan and the Consulate of Switzerland in Osaka orgenised a day-long programme with numerous dignitaries from Japan and Switzerland, as well as long-standing partners. The Swiss team is thrilled to be able to make good on its promise to open the pavilion to the public on 13 April 2025, unveiling an ultra-light pavilion that showcases Swiss innovation. New renderings and a teaser video are now available.

From 30 September to 3 October, the State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, Martina Hirayama, will visit Japan with a high-ranking scientific delegation. The inauguration of the new Swissnex site and consulate in Osaka on 30 September will be one of the highlights of the trip. Several meetings at ministerial level are on the agenda. Ms Hirayama will also take part in the Science and Technology for Society Forum in Kyoto. On 1 October, the visit will culminate in the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen existing ties between Switzerland and Japan in all areas of research.
