Support for Fire Safety Measures in Local Government General Education Institutions

The project aims at increasing the fire safety of children in general education institutions in peripheral and disadvantaged regions of Latvia. It shall improve safety of children in case of fire in 138 general education institutions and widen knowledge about fire safety by utilising and building on Swiss experience.

NGO Fund Latvia

Elderly people present their work

The NGO Fund aims at improving the life of children, young and elderly people. Therefore, the Fund offers small grants to NGOs working with these target groups. Thus, for example children and young people with special needs are supported, while elderly people profit from activities in areas such as culture, education or health.

Scientific Exchange Programme (Sciex) Latvia

The Scientific Exchange Programme between the New Member States and Switzerland, Sciex-NMS.ch for short, has given over 500 young researchers from new EU member states the opportunity to complete a short-term residency in Switzerland to further their research.

Easier access to education for 9,000 schoolchildren

December 2010 saw the delivery to Latvia of the last of 110 school buses funded by the Swiss-Latvian cooperation programme. These buses enable the organisation of an effective school transportation system in disadvantaged rural regions of the country.

Modernisation of courts

The number and complexity of court proceedings in Latvia is increasing while courts are not equipped with the necessary new technologies to meet adequately the demands placed on them. The Project aims to improve the capacity and the quality of the judiciary. New communication technologies (audio, video conference, internet) and more efficient court procedures will contribute to reaching this goal.

Technical Assistance Fund

The bilateral Framework Agreement foresees the possibility of utilizing a maximum of 1.5% of the total allocation to cover certain management costs in the beneficiary country. The technical as-sistance will support the submission of qualitative projects, transparent processes, and a good visibility of the Swiss Contribution in Latvia.

Financial Reporting Project

Despite major reforms by the New EU Member States to their legal and regulatory frameworks governing corporate sector accounting and auditing, there is a substantial unfinished institutional development agenda in the field of financial reporting. The Financial Reporting Technical Assistance Program provides support to five national administrations (in Latvia as well as in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia) which face capacity constraints and challenges in fully implementing – both in law and in practice – the very demanding obligations imposed by the rapidly-evolving acquis communautaire in this field.

Project Preparation Facility (PPF)

The Swiss Contribution to enlargement aims to finance a broad variety of projects. The PPF provided the necessary financial assistance to enable Executing Agencies to submit high qualityproject proposals. This was especially  important in the case of complex projects.
