As the official representation of Switzerland, the embassy covers all matters concerning diplomatic relations between the two countries. It represents Swiss interests in the areas of political and economic affairs, development cooperation, education and culture.

The tasks of the embassy

State of emergency declared in Myanmar on 1 February 2021

A State of Emergency has been declared this Monday morning, February 1st in Myanmar and power has been handed over to the military. The situation is calm for the moment. The Embassy of Switzerland in Yangon and the Regional Consular Center in Bangkok are following the situation closely.

In these extraordinary circumstances, we would like to make the following recommendations:

  • to follow the developments in the local media and to respect at all times the instructions of the local authorities;
  • Please follow the instructions from local authorities regarding the COVID-19 context and the current security situation; 
  • make some reserves of cash in local currency; 
  • given the possible communication interruptions, you may consider downloading the "Bridgefy" application on your smartphone, which allows communication via bluetooth over short distances.

COVID-19

The embassy is open and operational, but due to the current situation, public access is restricted until further notice. Services are available by appointment only. Please make sure to book an appointment by yangon@eda.admin.ch prior to visiting.

 

New online consular services

The Embassy of Switzerland in Bangkok with its Regional Consular Center is pleased to inform the registered Swiss nationals about the expansion of our online services. As part of a pilot project, the following consular services can now also be ordered and paid for by credit card at the FDFA online counter from 12 May until 30 June 2020:

  • Certificate of nationality and registration
  • Confirmation of pension
  • Confirmation of driver’s license
  • Confirmation of Swiss passport
  • Confirmation other (only in consultation with the Consular Center)

For confirmation of driver’s licenses and passports, the respective original documents must be sent to the Regional Consular Center in Bangkok.

These new online services are available to Swiss nationals who are registered at the Regional Consular Center in Bangkok and have their official residence in one of the following countries: Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, or Thailand.

We encourage you to benefit from this temporary pilot project. In an evaluation process at the end of June, a decision will be made on the potential continuation of the expanded online services.

Up in the air – and welcome home!

On April 1, the 1st ever direct flight between Yangon and Zurich took off to bring back home 208 Swiss, European and US- and Canadian citizens. A big THANK YOU to Edelweiss, their crew, our incredibly helpful colleagues in Bangkok and Berne, and our European partners in Yangon for this joint effort in the spirit of solidarity and friendship. Special thanks to the Myanmar authorities who made every effort to make the impossible possible.

For security reasons, each visitor has to present a valid ID document with photo. It’s requested to enable you to reach the Embassy’s floor.
