Assistance to refugees in Yusuf Batil Camp through the provision of life-saving nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene services

Project completed
Yusuf Batil Camp is the second largest refugee camp in the Maban area of South Sudan, with a population of 41,082 (UNHCR, October 2016). Due to low government capacity to provide services, refugees depend on United Nations (UN) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) partners to provide all essential services such as water, sanitation, emergency nutrition and health care.

The project in brief

Background	South Sudan currently hosts 261,500 refugees (HRP, 2017), the majority coming from Sudan and residing mainly in Upper Nile and Unity States. (UNHCR, Oct 2016). The host communities have experienced multiple displacements themselves and therefore have limited capacities to support the refugees. With the ongoing conflict in their home country, the refugee population find themselves in a protracted emergency situation.
Objectives	Contribute to prevent excess morbidity and mortality of refugees in Yusuf Batil Camp and other vulnerable populations in Maban County.
Target groups	The number of refugee beneficiaries targeted is 41,082. The refugee population includes a large proportion of women (22%), and girls and boys (61% children in total, 21% of children under the age of 5).
Medium-term outcomes	Reduce morbidity and mortality related to water borne diseases, mulnutrition and poor hygiene and sanitation through access to nutrition, water, hygiene and sanitation services.
Results	Expected results: Provide uninterrupted safe drinking water Improve sanitation and hygiene through behaviour change campaigns Provide nutrition and health services Results from previous phases: 98.8% of households have access to a shared family latrine within 50 meters from homes. Access to water reached 20 l/person/day, which exceeds the Sphere standard of 15 l/person/day. Provision of nutrition has kept GAM rates below the WHO emergency threshold of 15%. Trained over 40 community-based water committees to maintain water points.
