Climatic extremes (flood and drought), insecurity, economic shocks, and livestock diseases continue to negatively impact access to food, and incomes and livelihoods of agro-pastoral communities across South Sudan. In Aweil East and Panyijiar, at least 92'000 people have been directly impacted by flooding extremes with over 12'000 livestock lost.

According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) 2022, from May – July (lean season), over 7.74 million people are in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse. With regards to project intervention areas, 87'000 people are in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5) including Pibor County (Boma), counties of Aweil East, Rubkona and Panyijiar experience Emergency (IPC Phase 4), and Juba County is in Crisis (IPC Phase 3).

Further, the microeconomic situation has worsened and is characterised by low agro-production, high food prices and low incomes, leading to negative coping strategies such as child labour, early and forced marriages.

Cases of forceful and voluntary recruitment of children and youth into armed groups continue across Unity. The 2022 Humanitarian Needs Overview indicated that at least 4.6 million children are at risk of violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect.

The current livestock production systems in South Sudan exposes pastoral communities to poor sanitation and diseases through livestock products (milk and meat) and other infectious vectors. VSF-Suisse will apply the One Health Approach to control these diseases.

• Outcome 1: Improved food and nutrition security and income opportunities among targeted vulnerable populations
• Outcome 2: Psycho-social and mental health/wellbeing of children and their families/caregivers is promoted, their rights are protected and enhanced capability of communities including community-based support mechanisms capacity to respond and cope with threats and promote peaceful coexistence
• Outcome 3: There is improved knowledge, attitudes and practices related to veterinary public health/ one health including nutrition behaviour change

Principaux résultats attendus:  

Outcome 1:

• 3’000 hybrid poultry distributed to 500 beneficiaries
• 600'000 heads of livestock received animal health services as part of livelihoods protection
• 150 women/youth trained in animal (oxen and donkey) traction, provided with donkey and Oxploughs and 20 youth trained to fabricate ploughs
• 5 Gum Arabic groups (100 people) supported with inputs and market linkages and 10 groups supported to establish multi-purpose fruit tree nurseries
• 200 women (youth) supported and trained through Village Savings and Loans Associations Group

Outcome 2:

• Protection/ child protection awareness sessions reached to 18'000 people (6'000 girls, 6'000 boys, 3'000 men and 3'000 women)
• 100 girls and 100 boys, including adolescents, with disabilities, at risk of mental health and psychological distress provided with individual and specialized case management services including referrals
• 12'000 emergency affected children and youth received mental health and psychosocial support
• 12 cattle camp level conflict mitigation/ peace building sessions conducted
• 90 child protection committee formed and 20 Boma Peace Committees mediate cattle related conflicts

Outcome 3:

• 24'000 people reached with improved health knowledge, attitude and practice on livestock diseases that affects public health
• 120 (80 male and 40 female) Community Animal Health Workers/Auxiliaries trained in preventing transmission of livestock diseases to humans

Principaux résultats antérieurs:  

• VSF-Suisse has well established bases in all the project locations and has well developed networks which enhance coordination with various community structures
• Livestock services (vaccination and treatment) have long lasting effects in protecting livestock which remain major livelihoods among the target population and the entire South Sudan
• Though a technical veterinary services provider, VSF-Suisse has over the years grown to become a reliable partner in mitigating livestock related conflicts, more so, the cross border conflict
• VSF-Suisse has developed into a reliable child protection actor, working in partnership with UNICEF in demobilisation and reintegration of child soldiers whom armed actors recruit mostly from cattle camps
