Situation in Ukraine: Federal Council decides on further measures to prevent the circumvention of international sanctions

In view of the situation in Ukraine, the Federal Council has today decided to take further measures to prevent the circumvention of international sanctions. It has amended the Ordinance of 2 April 2014 on measures to prevent the circumvention of international sanctions in relation to the situation in Ukraine to include the sanctions imposed by the EU in July. The revised ordinance enters into force at 6 pm today.

On behalf of Switzerland, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, expressed his consternation over the plane crash tragedy in the Ukraine and offered his condolences to the countries whose citizens were among the victims. Switzerland also extended an offer to the Ukrainian authorities to send experts to help to investigate the cause of the crash and to identify the victims.

At the Annual Conference on Swiss Cooperation with Eastern Europe, which was held on 9 May 2014 in Lucerne, SDC and SECO programme officers and guests from Switzerland and abroad discussed Switzerland's cooperation activities with a focus on private sector development.

The Federal Council today has condemned Russia’s annexation of Crimea. It has taken note of the sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States, and has decided to take all measures necessary to prevent Switzerland from being used to evade any of these sanctions. It will also strengthen coordination between the federal departments to analyse and monitor the situation in Ukraine.

Speaking in his capacity as the next chairman-in-office of the OSCE at the closing plenary session of the Ministerial Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, paid homage to the deceased former South African president, Nelson Mandela, as an exemplar of freedom and reconciliation. The representatives of the 57 OSCE member states adopted several decisions and declarations at the close of this year's Ministerial Council in Kiev.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will take part in the Ministerial Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Kiev on 5 and 6 December. The two-day conference of the foreign ministers of the 57 OSCE member states is the culmination of the Ukrainian chairmanship of the OSCE and marks the transition to Switzerland's chairmanship, which will begin on 1 January 2014. With its chairmanship of the OSCE in 2014, Switzerland will strengthen its commitment to stability in Europe, its neighbouring regions and the rest of the world.
