SI - Health through sustainable WaSH
The project aims to reduce mortality and morbidity of target populations through safe hygiene behaviours generated by the provision of safe water supply, environmental sanitation and integrating vector control. Three different phases of intervention (shock absorption, early recovery and risk preparedness and adaption) ensure delivery of sustainable and multi-sectoral solutions to maximise impact. A strong inclusion of the beneficiaries is aimed at in all phases of the project.

| Contexte | Years of fighting have left public services in Yemen almost nonexistent. Water resources are scarce and people are forced to resort to expensive, quality uncontrolled and unsustainable water supply methods, most notably water trucking. The deterioration of the delivery of public amenities, including water, sanitation and hygiene services causes diseases such as cholera or dengue fever, or more recently COVID-19 to develop faster. The country already faced a water and sanitation crisis prior to the outbreak of the war, and therefore calls for a multidimensional sustainable WaSH intervention focusing on the underlying causes of the crisis. The districts where the project will be implemented are classified (1) among the 106 (of 333) affected by cholera, (2) among the 43 priority districts with IPC category 5 (catastrophe) and GAM levels above the WHO upper threshold of 15, therefore comprise high relevance of intervention. Aden Government ranks in the top 3 Dengue infested governorates. Preliminary diagnostic assessments in the area highlighted alarming level in access to basic water supply, knowledge and access of key hygiene component and sanitation facilities. |
| Objectifs | Reducing the morbidity and mortality of vulnerable populations in target communities through sustainable access to safe WaSH. |
| Groupes cibles |
Total 124’750 beneficiaries: 60’000 persons (8’570 HH) for integrated hygiene, sanitation, water supply plus 64’750 persons (9’250 HH) for Dengue fever prevention in Aden (In Households, community level, health facilities & primary schools) |
| Effets à moyen terme |
Outcome 1: Target population demonstrates sustainable safe hygiene behaviours and practices. Outcome 2: The target population has access to sustainable safe environmental sanitation. Outcome 3: The target population is accessing sustainable safe water for drinking and other relevant uses. Outcome 4: The target population shows reduced disease vectors at household and community level due to IEC campaigns and appropriate chemical larval source management. |
