Zürcher Theater Spektakel – phasing out 2024 - 2025

The largest theatre festival of Switzerland, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel (ZTS) integrates the works of performers and theatre directors from the Southern and Eastern developing countries (S/E) into its yearly programmes, competitions and networks. SDC’s contribution allows specific efforts regarding research, pre-production works or co-productions and translations to make sure the artists get visibility, skills, networks, to benefit the cultural scene of their countries of origin.

Contesto Culture is a human right and an important means of expression in society with a potential of reflection, interaction and social change. Therefore, a vivid free culture scene is an important element for a society with freedom of expression as part of democracy/democratic participation. This is particularly relevant in view of increasingly repressive/authoritarian governments worldwide, where free civic space is shrinking. Theatre takes up themes that touch the public and trigger thinking. SDC supports art and culture as part of its development cooperation activities and as a contribution to the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions 2005.
Obiettivi

Artists and theatre directors from Southern and Eastern developing countries get a better access to the Swiss culture market, international networks and to the Swiss and international audience.

The local cultural sectors in S/E, whose framework conditions often make artists' work very difficult, are strengthened as the ZTS offers the artists opportunities for co-productions, to generate knowledge, experience, networks and visibillity to benefit their countries of origin.

Gruppi target Theater producers, directors and artists from the South and the East; indirectly aIso the theatre and arts scene and their audiences in SDC priority countries
Effetti a medio termine
  • The invited artists and theatre directors improve their network, knowledge, skills and visibility, and get better known and connected internationally and in their own countries
  • The artists get access to international contacts, opening up additional opportunities for co-production or international tours
  • The artistic, technical and strategic competencies of the artists are strengthened
  • The income of the artists rise with the performances in Zürich, internationally and in their own countries
  • Since the SDC wiII focus its portfolio to the field of film due to resource considerations, the partnership with ZTS will be phased out by thend of 2025. After 16 years of partnership, we assume that the established S/E format will nevertheless be uphold by ZTS. Beyond 2025, ZTS has the possibility to apply for funding to the SDC-financed South Cultural Fund, which supports all artistic disciplines
