Nigeria, ACF, Nutrition and WASH assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations in North-East Nigeria

Since the start of the conflict, 60% of pre-existing health centres have been damaged or destroyed in Borno, resulting in significantly reduced access to health and nutrition services, and increasing pressure on the existing services in the IDP camps and host communities. Even prior to the insurgency, northern Nigeria struggled with high malnutrition rates and poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators. ACF, in partnership with the Bomo State Primary Health Care Development Agency , conducted a mini nutrition assessment through SDC funding that identified preliminary GAM rates in Somo at 19.1%, which is very alarming and well above t' e WHO "critical" emergency GAM rates classification (>15%). Displacement increased the use of Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition services in camps by 49% in Bomo, overburdening staff and facilities.

IDPS, returnees and most vulnerable individuals affected by the conflict get access to Nutrition and WASH assistance in North-East Nigeria.

• Provision of medical & nutritional treatment , equipment & Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material to Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) sites in health facilities and camps clinics
• Training of health, community and care group workers on active case finding & referral of severely malnourished children, Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (C-MAM) & on Maternal, Infant & Young Children Feeding (MIYCF)
• Training of Health Workers on supply chain management
• Establishment of data collection system at community level for screening and nutrition counselling sessions
• Development and validation of surveillance tools and methodology
• Emergency latrines and bathing shelters construction
• Hygiene promotion sessions

Risultati fasi precedenti:  

1. Displaced populations (IDPs) have increased access to water, sanitation, hygiene, health & nutrition basic needs;
2. IDPs in Maiduguri & Jere Local Government Areas of Bomo State have received emergency humanitarian Non-Food Items assistance (Hygiene & Shelter kits);
3. Adequate nutritional treatment of severely acutely malnourished children is provided in Jere and Maiduguri;
4. Mobile response team provide health and nutrition services in newly accessible locations;
5. Surveillance of malnutrition prevalence and response preparation are improved.
