Contribution to the ICRC and IFRC National Society Investment Alliance (NSIA)
Progetto concluso
In order to realize the Movement’s full potential, the ICRC and the IFRC have committed to work together to increase the investment in Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies (NS). A joint fund, the National Society Investment Alliance (NSIA), has been launched to invest in capacity-strengthening and organizational development. It provides flexible, multi-year funding to support the development of NS to become stronger local humanitarian actors for their communities.

- NS in fragile contexts have access to substantial, multi-year financial support so they can invest in their development, with a focus on organizational development and capacity strengthening
- IFRC and ICRC refine their processes for identifying and managing NS development interventions in fragile contexts
- NSIA becomes a “reference tool” for the development of NS by demonstrating its added value and it increases its donor base
- Through short-term (Bridge) and long-term (Accelerator) funding, the selected NS in 2023:
- increase their humanitarian impact
- enhance and secure their capacity for the delivery of humanitarian services in high-risk settings
- increase institutional learning and knowledge sharing
- continue serving local communities and reinforcing their auxiliary role to their governments - Some of the 14 NS that benefited of a Bridge in 2022 have the opportunity to access to an Accelerator in 2023
- NSIA funding awards granted to more NS
- An evidence-based study/report on the impact of NSIA on NS in fragile context is produced (Swiss secondment)
- NSIA initiative is better positioned in donors forums (DAG/DSG) and in the framework of the 34th IC
- NSIA officially launched at the Council of Delegates in Antalya, Turkey, November 2017
- Secretariat (NSIA Office headed by a Fund Manager) set up to manage the Fund on behalf of the Steering Committee
- Criteria set up for allocating funds in funding rounds; Guidelines for applicants and application forms published
- The first 3 years, NSIA supported 25 NS: 10 in 2019, 7 in 2020 and 8 in 2021
- In 2022, NSIA supported 20 NS and distributed CHF 5.4 million, more than double the amount provided in 2021

| Contesto | 192 NS and nearly 14 million volunteers, with the support of their Movement partners, are committed to alleviating human suffering everywhere. They are known and trusted by the public at large, but also by public authorities and the people they aim to help. Despite the unique position of the Movement, many NS have not yet reached their potential. NS operating in the most fragile contexts do not necessarily have the luxury of investing their resources in their own development, but must rather focus on their operational response. In addition, the investment in the development of NS’ capacity is not particularly attractive to donors that prefer to fund visible operations. |
| Obiettivi | To develop and strengthen the capacity of the NS in most fragile contexts so they can provide relevant and adequate humanitarian services to people in need. |
