Multidonor Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB): Improvement of Citizen Security in Latin America and the Caribbean

The support provided by SDC (single- phase project) focusses on improving the effectiveness of public policies on citizen security in the Latin American and Caribbean countries, as a response to high levels of violence in the region. SDC will contribute to the IDB Multidonor Fund of the Citizen Security Initiative (CSI), aiming to strengthen the capacity of states to implement public policies on citizen security and promote exchange of lessons learnt through regional dialogue and bi- and multilateral cooperation in earmarked projects.

Capacity building programme in support of the Palestinian National Authority – Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary (SPS) measures

The single phase project seeks to develop national sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures responsive to World Trade Organization (WTO) requirements, contributing to enhance domestic and international trust and demand for Palestinian agriculture and agro-industrial products. The intervention will increase potential for Palestinian agro-economic growth and ultimately contribute to increase income of farmers. Last but not least, the project will contribute to develop and create pre-conditions for the implementation of a national food safety strategy, enhancing food sovereignty in Palestine.

Support to Strengthening Governance and Policy Dialogue in Health Sector in Moldova

Moldova's health sector reform agenda is ambitious and needs strong steering by the Ministry of Health and adequate capacities of key national health institutions. This project supports the production and use of evidence, the revision of policy documents and institutional capacity building, thus contributing to setting a favourable environment for health reforms and strong synergies with the policy components of all SDC health projects.

Transforming Tanzania's Charcoal Sector

The project formalizes, up-scales and promotes a tested and functioning model of a sustainable, more energy efficient charcoal value chain. A Community Based Forest Management approach contributes to the generation of higher incomes from charcoal and other forest products and related royalties invested into community development through local governance mechanisms, benefitting 80’000 villagers. The existing model of 8 Kilosa villages is extended to 22 new villages in 3 districts through practical stakeholder training.

Institutionalisation of the Field School approach

SDC and FAO have been instrumental in promoting the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach in Eastern Africa and SDC is recognized as the key donor in harmonization and policy mainstreaming of the approach that serves more than 10’000 groups in the region. Its sustainability will now be further enhanced by setting up a regional FS knowledge hub that provides support to further integrate it in public and private extension service providers.

Market Opportunities for Livelihood Improvement in Kakheti, Georgia

Livestock farming is the main economic activity for the majority of poor households in the Kakheti region of Georgia. Through better access to markets, services and inputs for the dairy and meat value chains, target farmers will substantially improve their income. By the end of the project phase 27’000 households will have benefitted directly from improved access to markets, services, inputs, a more conducive operating environment and better protection from natural disasters.

Global Sustainable Land Management Platform for Knowledge Management and Decision Support (WOCAT)

Sustainable Land Management (SLM) is essential for reducing land degradation, restoring degraded land and striving to achieve land degradation neutrality. WOCAT, the Global Sustainable Land Management Platform, is recognised by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) as the primary database for SLM best practices reporting, offers robust and up-to-date knowledge, tools and methods for evidence-based decision-making to implement the most appropriate practices within a given context and to improve land resources, ecosystems and livelihoods. The phase will focus on enhancement of knowledge uptake in decision support.

UNDP- Livelihoods Restoration in Crisis- Affected Communities in Syria

13.5 million people in Syria, two thirds of the population, are in acute humanitarian need. They have lost incomes and sustenance; public infrastructures, especially the water, sanitation and electricity systems, are in disrepair or destroyed. To build local resilience and Civil Society capacities, the UNDP implemented project is scaling up on-going livelihood restoration interventions in Rural Damascus, Horns, Tartous and Latakia. The project creates livelihood opportunities and restores critical community infrastructure and services.

Accelerate Registration of Medical Products

Efforts in research and development of medical products for diseases disproportionately affecting people in low and lower middle-income countries have been multiplied. Yet, after successful development of a medical product 4-7 years elapse before it is registered in these countries. Through the World Health Organisation and the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, SDC aims to strengthen capacities of African medicines regulatory authorities and increase the efficiency of regional and global medicines regulatory procedures.

UNOCHA – Humanitarian Pooled Fund (HPF) for the oPt 2016-2017

SDC financial contribution to the Humanitarian pooled Fund (HPF) managed by UNOCHA in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) will enable humanitarian actors to quickly respond to urgent humanitarian needs, mainly in Gaza Strip as well as in the West Bank, especially in Area C and East Jerusalem. This intervention is in line with SDC Cooperation Strategy 2015-2018 for the oPt that seeks to contribute to the promotion of and respect for international law, in particular provide assistance to the population in Gaza, Area C, the Seam Zone and East Jerusalem that enhances protection, prevents or mitigates the impact of violations or natural disasters, and enhances resilience of Palestinians.
