Peace

Peacebuilding is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and is a foreign policy priority. Thanks to its neutrality, its humanitarian tradition, its experience and expertise, Switzerland enjoys a high level of credibility in peacebuilding and is a sought-after partner worldwide. In the coming years, it intends to further strengthen its good offices – in particular its mediation capacities.

Over the past 20 years, Switzerland has been involved in over 30 peace processes in more than 20 countries worldwide and has developed a wide range of instruments to promote peace and security during this time. It is active in crisis and conflict management and conflict prevention and helps to develop international rules of conduct and norms for the international community and to improve their implementation.

But there is also the matter of preventing the outbreak of new conflicts and wars. To this end, Switzerland is actively involved in dealing with the past and prevention, supporting democratic processes, strengthening rule of law-based institutions, promoting human rights and integrating women into peace and security processes. At the same time, it is an active proponent of peace within international organisations such as the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the UN.
