New momentum in South East Asia ties: Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visits Indonesia and Singapore

On 5 August, Mr Cassis will travel on to Australia and New Zealand.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 1 to 9 August 2023. The visits to Indonesia and Singapore will centre on the implementation of the Federal Council's South East Asia Strategy. In Australia and New Zealand, the focus will be on global challenges and strengthening bilateral relations. Mr Cassis will also use the trip to meet local Swiss communities in the four countries to mark 1 August celebrations.

Switzerland is helping Indonesia to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Swiss Humanitarian Aid sent 600 oxygen concentrators to Jakarta on Saturday, with a total value of nearly CHF 1 million. This is the sixth delivery of oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies that Switzerland has made to another country since May 2021, worth over CHF 15 million in total.

Switzerland and Indonesia renewed their development partnership on February 25, 2021, by jointly launching Switzerland’s Economic Cooperation and Development Program with Indonesia 2021-2024. The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will provide CHF 65 million in grant funding to support Indonesia in becoming a more competitive, resilient, and equitable economy. The Program 2021-2024 is a testament to the strong partnership between Switzerland and Indonesia, which are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations this year.

Bern, 10.11.2020 - On 10 November, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, the head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER), held a virtual discussion with the ASEAN Secretary General, six ministers of economic affairs and four vice ministers and state secretaries of ASEAN countries. It was the first time that such an exchange had taken place and was intended to identify possible areas of economic cooperation.

On 1 August 2019, on the margins of the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bangkok, Switzerland and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) inked their intent to further develop cooperation and the exchange of expertise. The signing of the Memorandum followed a trilateral meeting between Switzerland’s State Secretary Pascale Baeriswyl, Thailand’s Permanent Secretary Busaya Mathelin and ASEAN’s Deputy Secretary General Hoang Anh Tuan.
