The invitation extended to him by the Hokkaido University in Sapporo and the Academic Alpine Club of Hokkaido, to attend the official ceremony to mark the reopening of the Soranuma Hut, was an occasion for the Ambassador of Switzerland to praise the longstanding friendship relations between Switzerland and Hokkaido. These relations date back to 1927, when a young professor from Pfäffikon, Arnold Gubler, got a teaching position at the University of Sapporo and moved to Japan. Together with his wife Madeleine, they were ski enthusiasts, and started organizing ski tours in the region of Sapporo.

A chain of mountain houses inspired by the Swiss chalets was built in this age of pioneering development of the winter sports in Japan, with the support of H.I.H. Prince Chichibu. The Hokkaido University, owner of the mountain houses, and the Academic Alpine Club of Hokkaido have dedicated a lot of efforts to the preservation of this historic heritage. The presence of H.I.H. Princess Akiko at the events related to the reopening of the Soranuma Hut was a great honor for all the participants.

On the occasion of his visit, Ambassador Paroz also met the Governor of Hokkaido, Mrs. Harumi Takahashi, the Mayor of Sapporo City, Mr. Katsuhiro Akimoto, the chairman of the town council of Kuchan (which is a sister city of St Moritz in Switzerland), Mr. Yasuaki Suzuki, and the Executive Vice-Presidents of the Hokkaido University, Mr. Masanori Kasahara and Mr. Ko Hasegawa.
