Coping with Desertification in Mongolia

The project objective is that Mongolia is able effectively implement and coordinate national and international efforts for coping with desertification and promoting sustainable livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas. To attain this objective the Project has four outcomes: 1) The NCCD is effectively coordinating & reporting on desertification issues relevant to Mongolia. 2) Local communities are empowered in sustainable management of natural resources and diversification of livelihoods to cope with desertification. 2400 Herders in 9 soums and 2/3 of all farmers in the Buyant River Delta will have organized themselves and are using the natural resources more sustainably. In Khovd city 8000 households will use energy efficient stoves 3) Mongolia’s youth as well as the general public is aware of the countries environmental challenges and has a basic knowledge about the threats of desertification. 24 Eco-schools will use the new curriculum for Education for Sustainable Development. 4) A database on appropriate knowledge, technologies, approaches and tools to cope with desertification in Mongolia is established and disseminated in order to support project implementation and scaling up at grassroots level and informed decision making at policy level. 30 desertification technologies will be tested and actively disseminated and 50 people per month will access the newly developed database.
