Official working visit of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in Switzerland

Bern, Press releases, 12.04.2013

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Neuchâtel on 12 April 2013 for official talks. The discussions at this working visit focused on bilateral cooperation. In addition, international and multilateral issues were also among the themes discussed, notably Switzerland’s OSCE Chairmanship slated for 2014, and the situation in the Southern Caucasus and in Syria.

Switzerland’s intensive relations with Russia continue to unfold dynamically. This is borne witness to by the invitation extended to Switzerland, within the scope of Russia’s G20 Presidency, to attend the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank presidents. In addition to the political, economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation between the two countries, human rights issues were also on the discussion agenda.

Other focal points of discussion were the 2014 Swiss Chairmanship of the OSCE, during which our country will seek to foster the strengthening of the Organization and the stability in the OSCE region. In the area of the economy, prominence is accorded to the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between EFTA and the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Discussions were rounded off with the situation in the Southern Caucasus - where Switzerland has been exercising Russia’s protective power mandate in Tbilisi and Georgia’s protective power mandate in Moscow since 2009 - and with the developments in Syria.
