Islamic Relief Worldwide, Jebel Marra WASH and Health Response

Progetto concluso

Darfur continues to suffer under a protracted and multifaceted conflict situation. The outbreak of fighting since December 2012 in Central Darfur State has considerably increased the IDP caseload in the Nertiti area. The present proposal is designed to increase access to improved basic primary health care and WASH services in the Nertiti area of the Central Darfur State for about 43’000 conflict affected persons (of which 53% are female). Phase 1 allowed to increase access to basic health service and WASH for 28’000 conflict affected people in Central Darfur.

Contesto

Nertiti is located in the newly established Central Darfur State with scarce financial means and few human resources for the services to the IDP’s and host communities. Since the expulsion of INGOs in 2009, the region has drawn little attention from the humanitarian community to assist the affected population. Services provisions are weak.

Obiettivi

Significant reduction of the morbidity and mortality among the conflict affected population by sustainibly strenghtening the basic health system and WASH. At the same time through a balanced approach diffuse ethnic tensions and increase the harmony between IDP’s and Host Communities.

Gruppi target

Gender sensitive support to about 43’000 vulnerable people (53% female) addressing in a balanced way different groups: IDP’s; Host Community, and Nomads. Active involvement of women in order to make sure that they properly benefit from the project.

Effetti a medio termine

Sufficient access to quality PHC, drinking water and hygiene through an enhanced functioning of 3 additional clinics and 12 water installations as well as conducting hygiene awareness campaigns. At the end of the project, the trained Water Users Committees (WUCs) will take over the management of the water schemes and the SMoH will take over the health facilities.

Risultati

Risultati fasi precedenti:

In Sector 7, IDP South Camp and the Thur village the functioning of 3 PHC clinics has been optimized (August 2012 to April 2013: treatment of 12’000 patients; increased access to safe drinking water for 28’000 persons). Obvious need for more investment in infrastructure and capacity building for staff. Recognized potential for more community participation and better coordination with other actors.
