Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program, Phase II
Industry accounts for a significant portion of global emissions, and has wide-reaching environmental and community impacts. The transformation of Industrial Parks (IPs) to Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs) can make a significant contribution to Resource Efficient Cleaner Production, avoidance of waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Contexte |
The first phase of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program (GEIPP) was launched in late 2018 to support the transition of existing (brownfield) IPs to EIPs. GEIPP builds on a long-standing cooperation between the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) on industrial resource efficiency. Working in more scalable models with groups of enterprises located in industrial parks provides a valuable starting point, along with greater emphasis for tailored advocacy and enabling policy for and supportive governance of resource efficient and cleaner production methods in the country. |
Objectifs |
The objective of the phase II of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP II) is to promote circular economy approaches in industries, to mitigate the climate impact of industries and to help the industrial parks to adapt to the negative consequences of climate change. Therefore, GEIPP II will continue to facilitate the adoption of Eco-Industrial Park approaches by supporting industrial parks and their tenant companies to increase their resource productivity. This includes, among other things, continuous reduction of waste generation, promotion of recycling methods and improvement of the economic, environmental and social performance of the companies. With basic capacity building and EIP piloting undertaken in GEIPP I, GEIPP II is moving from demonstration of the benefits towards facilitation and replication of EIP approaches. The up scaling of EIP approaches will result in enhanced productivity of industries and in a reduction of their CO2 emission and enhanced resilience. |
Effets à moyen terme |
EIP approaches incentivised and mainstreamed in relevant policy and regulations leading to an increased role of EIPs in environmental, industry and other relevant policies at the national levels in the participating program countries. EIP opportunities implementation, with environmental (e.g. resource productivity) economic and social benefits achieved by industrial parks and their enterprises confirmed. Exchange of EIP best practices facilitated, tenant companies and park management entities supported to access already existing financial support mechanisms, and Global Public Goods (e.g. International EIP Framework, standard-setting, EIP tools and implementation guidelines) outreach promoted. Outcome 4 is to increase effectiveness and enhance flexibility. This outcome will fund the implementation of additional activities in countries with a higher absorption capacity through direct activities or transfers of funds to the Country-Level Intervention budget. |
Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: Mapping of existing capacity of institutions and service providers on eco-industrial parks development Strengthened national Institutions relevant to EIP policy development and implementation Mapping of candidate industrial parks for EIP intervention Enhanced capacity of industrial parks and tenant SME’s to meet international standards and requirements for EIP EIP requirements implemented by park management and tenant SME’s Specific EIP tools developed EIP services delivery strengthened Lessons learnt from EIP interventions captured and effectively exchanged Awareness raising activities on EIP developed Principaux résultats antérieurs: The GEIPP phase I program has directly assisted 7 countries through targeted country-level interventions and support from the Global Knowledge Development component on their path to a more resource-efficient and sustainable economic development. Altogether, 22 industrial parks across the 7 GEIPP countries have received detailed technical assistance on their transformation into EIPs. Beside park-level and multi-company technical support, 114 tenant companies in the parks have received resource efficiency advice and implementation support. By the end of 2022, GEIPP has achieved the following results: 23’388’391 kilowatt hours saved through energy efficiency measures 1’417’182 additionally produced and renewable kilowatt hours 46’509 cubic meters water saved 265 tons of material saved (waste reused and recycled) 12’952 tons of CO2 Eq/year mitigated |
