Contributions to OCHA Field Operations in 2017

OCHA’s mission is to mobilise and coordinate effective humanitarian emergency assistance of the United Nations in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies. It is responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent and timely response to emergencies.

Therefore, SDC seeks to provide support to OCHA field offices in relevant humanitarian contexts, in line with SDC geographic and thematic priorities.

Médecins du Monde Suisse (MdM)

MdM vise à assurer un accès universel et durable à la santé (santé sexuelle et reproductive et santé de l’enfant) en faveur des personnes exclues. Cette conception de la santé materno-infantile permet de mettre en cohérence les aspects curatifs et préventifs de l’action en santé tout en lui conférant une continuité dans l’espace – de la famille, aux communautés et aux structures de santé - et dans les phases – entre développement et urgence.

Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics FIND

The Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), working through a public-private partnership model, drives the development and early implementation of new diagnostic tests for poverty-related diseases. From a global public health perspective, accurate and affordable diagnosis is critical. It helps ensure better care to patients, enables equitable, timely and correct medical treatment in low-resource settings, and thus reduces wastage of medicines and antimicrobial resistance. It is essential also for emergency preparedness.

Contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GF)

Health is a precondition, an indicator and an outcome of sustainable development. The Global Fund follows the vision of a world free of the burden of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria with better health for all. It channels a big share of the funds dedicated to end these epidemics that affect disproportionately the poorest and most vulnerable people. It does so in accordance to the Global Plans of its main multilateral  specialised partners. Since it was created, it has supported programmes that saved 20 million lives.

Financial Support to the Programme of Work and Budget of the OECD Development Assistance Committee for the years 2017 - 2018

OECD DAC helps member states and their partners maximise the impact of their development co-operation. DAC focuses on reporting, analysis and promotion of financing for development; the review of development co-operation programmes, policies and practices; and the provision of good development practice to enhance the quality and effectiveness of co-operation. SDC wants to continue supporting, including financially, these important activities and reflections for the Swiss international co-operation, especially in order to implement the SDGs.

Implementation of Operational Concept 2017-2020 on Cash Transfer Programming (CTP)

With this Credit Proposal, SDC/HA would like to sustain its engagement on cash transfer programming (CTP) as an operational actor and a donor. Due to its own extensive experience and added-value in the use of cash, SDC/HA is a credible actor in today’s global discussions and dialogue on CTP. It is important to harness that position and to continue to support the cash-based transfer modality both within the organization and in the humanitarian system. The Credit Proposal is for the implementation of SDC/HA’s Operational Concept on CTP 2017-2020.

Strengthening Human Rights institutions in Bangladesh

People in Bangladesh repeatedly suffer from human rights violations which especially affect poor and marginalised people with limited remedy and widespread impunity. The project strengthens (i) the National Human Rights Commission to more effectively promote and protect human rights and (ii) civil society to promote and monitor Human Rights and provide legal aid.

In Niger la DSC punta a rafforzare il sistema di istruzione e la formazione professionale. Oltre 1,5 milioni di giovani che vivono nelle zone rurali del Paese ne sono attualmente esclusi e il loro futuro inserimento nel mondo del lavoro dipende da un’efficace sinergia tra istruzione di base di qualità e formazioni professionali adattate alle esigenze della popolazione.

Les Sarments de Lavaux - Food Aid Swiss Dairy Products (Lebanon)

Through the usage of food aid in the form of Swiss dairy products, Swiss Humanitarian Aid contributes to the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, undernourishment, and disease. The SDC’s Humanitarian Aid administers the credit granted by parliament for a yearly amount of some CHF 20 million destined for the purchase of Swiss dairy products and their use for the benefit of the needy. Its task is to ensure a sustainable, targeted, and closely monitored food aid.

Contribution 2017 to the World Food Programme’s Immediate Response Account (IRA)

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. The contribution to the Immediate Response Account (IRA), a multilateral funding mechanism, allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies. The IRA reinforces WFP’s principles of timeliness, predictability and flexibility.
