SMArt – Sustainable Mountain Art

Global key challenges addressed by the SDC’s Global Programmes include climate change, water, migration, and food security. In order to promote the public’s awareness of these challenges, this project applies art and culture as an additional communication channel. A special focus is given to the linkages of mountain regions with these global themes. The overall objective is to sensitize the civil society in key aspects of sustainable development. Strong links of art and culture are developed between Switzerland and partner countries in order to foster a dialogue and promote the same common issues.

TVET Centers of Competence project, phasing out

Over the past three years SDC has been supporting and co-financing the GIZ Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program through upgrading and enhancing the performance of six existing TVET institutions to become Centers of Competence (CoCs). Systemic change requires long processes and time to be fully achieved. This phasing-out period will allow the project and its partners to consolidate the achievements and to ensure sustainability of the outcomes. Synergies with other SDC funded projects will be further enhanced.

Sustainable Land Management Project (SLMP)

The rural population in Afghanistan suffers from overexploited and rapidly deteriorating land and water resources. Policies for sustainable land management are only slowly emerging. There is an urgent and sustained need for professional and institutional capacity for sustainable land management to prevent further degradation, improve production and reduce disaster risks. This reduces vulnerability and contributes to improved food security and better livelihoods for poor rural families.

Backstopping SDC Climate Change and Environment (CC&E) Network

A climate change (CC) smart Swiss development cooperation requires a timely knowledge management (KM) and a sound thematic expertise. Phase 4 of this backstopping mandate seeks to secure the necessary resources and to allow for the required flexibility in a dynamic setting. It shall stimulate joint learning, tap thematic expertise, capitalize experiences, and mainstream CC&E. By doing so, the CC&E Network will contribute to improve the quality of SDC’s operational activities and nourish the policy dialogue at different levels.

Au Bénin en général, environ 11% des ménages sont en situation d’insécurité alimentaire et 38% vivent en-dessous du seuil de pauvreté. L’agriculture constitue la principale source d’emploi et de revenu. Le présent programme contribue à l’accroissement durable de la productivité des exploitations familiales paysannes agricoles et pastorales des départements du Borgou et de l’Alibori par la promotion des filières agroalimentaires (mais, riz, lait, viande).

Dans les régions du delta intérieur du Niger, au centre et au Nord du Mali, les populations rurales sont confrontées à des crises structurelles multiformes dont l’insécurité alimentaire. La DDC appuie les autorités locales avec des projets économiques dans les filières agricoles porteuses pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire et réduire la pauvreté d’au moins 150'000 personnes. En plus, elle accompagne les municipalités de cette zone dans la maitrise d’ouvrage du développement territorial et la gestion pacifique des ressources naturelles.

Enhancing Nutrition of Upland Farming Families (ENUFF)

In Lao PDR, chronic malnutrition is a pressing issue affecting social and economic growth. Stunting prevalence is amongst the highest in the world, affecting an estimated 44% of children under five years of age, and exceeding 60% among children from upland ethnic communities. ENUFF project will contribute to the implementation of the national Multisectoral Food and Nutrition Security Action Plan (MSFNSAP), where various aspects like nutrition-sensitive farming, health, hygiene and care practices will be converged, leading to behaviour changes and an improved nutritional status in particular of women and children.

Swiss Civil Society Organisations Platform on Migration and Development

The government-led debates on migration and development are increasingly promoting a multi-stakeholder approach that highlights the participation of civil society. The project creates a “Swiss Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Platform on Migration and Development” that coordinates and strengthens the contribution of Swiss civil society actors to the policy dialogue and discussions on migration and development at the national and international level. Thereby it contributes to coherent migration policies that support social and economic development.

National Human Rights Programme for Afghanistan (Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission)

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has a constitutional mandate to promote and protect human rights of women, men, girls and boys living in Afghanistan. Towards that end, the AIHRC lobbies and works with the Afghan government. It contributes to significantly enhance human rights awareness of Afghan people. Switzerland, together with a number of other development partners, supports the AIHRC financially, technically and when required politically.

Support to Recovery and Reconstruction in Nepal Programme (SRRNP)

Three major earthquakes left over 8’500 people dead, 3 mio homeless and affected one third of the population in Nepal. Switzerland’s contribution to the recovery and reconstruction efforts will ensure the equitable distribution of services and provisions especially from a gender and social inclusion perspective through, the provision of direct recovery and reconstruction support to the affected people, capacity building of the local government and other service delivery agencies.

Strengthening the Right to Adequate Food, FIAN International

With 815 million undernourished people in 2017, the right to food as laid in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights is still not realized. For the past thirty years, FIAN International has raised awareness about people's right to food worldwide and expanded spaces for civil society to hold governments more accountable. This project will promote effective participation of rights holders in food security and nutrition policies and governance mechanisms and be complemented by SDC support to the mandate of the UN Special rapporteur on the right to food.

Support to IDPS CSO Activities – Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding

By supporting the activities of the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding, SDC commits to the inclusiveness of policy processes concerned with conflict and fragility with a long-term perspective. The Platform’s purpose is to strengthen the participation of civil society organisations in processes under the New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States. Fostering civil society participation in conflict affected and fragile contexts is an important element of Switzerland’s commitment as co-chair of the OECD’s International Network for Conflict & Fragility.
