Contribution to the Disaster Law Programme (ex-IDRL) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Switzerland, through SDC’s financial contribution to the IFRC Disaster Law Programme, effectively contributes to prevent and mitigate the impact of natural disasters by reinforcing States regulation in disaster risk management, thus reducing the numbers of victims affected within such emergencies.

Support to the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD)

In February 2012, Switzerland signed a partnership agreement to join a network aimed at boosting global emergency preparedness. The network is called United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) and is run by the World Food Programme as a common service accessible to UN organizations, GOs and NGOs. By contributing to the network, Switzerland aims at enhancing its own preparedness and response capacity as well as of the international humanitarian community.

Swiss experts to UN agencies in the frame of the regional crises in the Middle East

As a result of the ongoing violence in Syria and in Iraq, more than 12.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Syria and 5.2 million people in Iraq by end of 2014. 3.3 million Syrian refugees (January 2015 figures) are registered and/or assisted by host governments, what leads to heavy burden on the resources of the host communities. SDC secondments to UN agencies of Swiss experts allow technical support, advice and strategic planning in the three domains of intervention of the Swiss Cooperation Strategy 2015-2018 (Basic services and emergency relief; Protection; Water), as well as in the domain of coordination. Through its experts, Switzerland can expand its operational engagement and humanitarian presence in the region, including in contexts where SDC has no office (Iraq and Syria).

Fondation Hirondelle, program contribution South and Humanitarian aid 2015 - 2016

Fondation Hirondelle is a Swiss NGO founded by journalists that creates or supports independent media in post-conflict zones and developing countries. By providing impartial, professional information to populations who would otherwise be deprived of it, Fondation Hirondelle helps renew dialogue, build peace and contributes to economic development and to the emergence of democratic societies.

Contribution to the Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP)

SDC has been strongly advocating for an increased use in cash transfer programmes (CTP) in emergency response while underlining the challenges linked to good quality cash programmes. The Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP) is a leading reference in the field of CTPs. It aims to improve the quality of emergency cash transfer and voucher programming across the humanitarian sector and is dedicated to promoting good practice through learning.

Strengthening of UNHCR Technical Sections (Shelter & Settlement, Environment, Cash)

SDC funding allows UNHCR to improve the technical quality, integrity and capacity of its operations through the development of technical support activities, processes and mechanisms guaranteeing quality standards in UNHCR programmes.

Long-term support to UNRWA’s reform

This intervention will enable UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for the Palestine Refugees in the Near East) to further implement its development mandate by supporting two substantial components of its 2011-15 reform agenda; namely, UNRWA Resource Mobilization Strategy and UNRWA e-Health Information System, These two reforms will improve the overall provision of direct services to Palestine refugees by increasing funding for the Agency, with the implementation of the Resource Mobilization Strategy, and by strengthening its internal management capacities, with the implementation of the e-Health Information System

La crisi siriana, scoppiata nel 2011, si è trasformata in una delle peggiori catastrofi umanitarie verificatesi dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale. Il CICR è una delle rare organizzazioni internazionali che riescono a operare all’interno del Paese. La DSC conta sul sostegno del CICR per fornire cibo, accesso all’acqua e cure sanitarie ai milioni di siriani prigionieri del conflitto.
