President Berset to attend third meeting of the European Political Community

Press releases, 03.10.2023

President Alain Berset will attend the third meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) in the southern Spanish city of Granada on 5 October. The meeting will be attended by representatives from 47 states including Switzerland, and from the institutions of the European Union.

On this occasion, the heads of state and government will be discussing the issues of security in Europe and energy supply, with a particular focus on geopolitical developments. Mr Berset and the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will co-chair a high-level exchange on multilateralism, including security and geostrategic issues, and will also take the opportunity to hold bilateral talks.

The European Political Community is a forum aimed at promoting political dialogue and cooperation on the European continent. The founding summit was held in Prague in October 2022. This was followed by a second meeting held in the Moldovan capital Chișinău in June. In future, the meetings will continue to be held alternately inside and outside the EU. The next meeting will be hosted by the United Kingdom in the spring. Switzerland actively supports this fresh platform for dialogue.

In the run-up to the Granada summit, Switzerland, the European Council on Foreign Relations (think-tank) and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy organised a workshop in Geneva on the role of the EPC in the European security order. Around 30 experts from EPC countries and institutions such as the EU and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) met to discuss the future of the security architecture in Europe.
